I like Eleanor, Sadie, Matilda, Emmeline...I have been meaning to look into my tomes of genealogy research because I know there are some good names there. I do remember the name Mehetabel (nickname: Hetty) popping up 10 or more times on my dad's Puritan side, and have just shown that to my husband. He just loved it! I remember when I first started doing my genealogy as a teenager and finding that name, and was fascinated with it.
I had a great-g-g-g-grandmother named Cornelia, whose father was Alvin Orion, and son was William Wallace. Amongst the Puritan names is a Comfort Soule (her last name). That's pretty neat. I'm also seeing a number of Lydias, Jabez, Freeloves.
My g-g-grandmother was Mattie, and her sister was Emma. My great-aunt was named Sabra, a name I love! She was born in New Brunswick, and died this morning actually, at home in Rhode Island.
I like Cordelia better than Cornelia, and just adore Emmeline and its various spellings. I like Dianthe also, and had a list of Greek names that I liked, including Ianthe, Ariadne, and the like, but we just want an old fashioned name in the more recent past to honor.
Speaking of which, I bet some of us are related! Any folks with ties to Rhode Island, Rehoboth, MA area? I have ties up the hooha from around there!

Cordelia could be nicknamed Delia...
I have a g-grandmother born in Providence in the mid-to-late 1800's... her last name was Silvi and I was always told I had gypsy in my blood because of 'that' side of my mom's dad. lol I suspect with a last name like that she was just portugese.
Also have family in Pleasantville, Nova Scotia on my grandmother and g-grandmothers side. My g-grandy came over from there when she was 15. Can't think of the family name right now... I believe it starts with a double L. Ll-something.... swedish. 100% swede. The descendants are still there... they were poor farming folk...they probably still are. When I outgrew my clothes as a child, my mom would always box them up and send them to NS. I have an old oxen yoke from them. They sent it down for me when I moved into this house on the Cape. I am going to make it a point to go there next summer.
I had a neighbor as a kid that lived down the street, two farms away from us... Zuretti's farm... their only daughters name was Madeline. I always loved that name. So old-fashioned and sweet rolling off the tongue.
Have fun and take your time choosing your baby's name. She'll have it forever and it's a special gift to bestow on someone you've given life to.

Isn't it typically the "daughter-in-law" that you like to get all wound up? I know, I should be nice this close to Christmas, but I couldn't resist!

My fathers name was Edson Bartlett. He signed things E. Bartlett because he said he didn't like Edson. I told him it could have been worse; he could've been named after his father Edgison and been Edgie Jr.

I'm fascinated by how people deal with their names, liking or disliking, growing in to them or discarding them. Naming a child can be such fun and equally can become such a head ache.
I never liked my middle name as a child though I think I've grown to like it. I very deliberately chose what I thought was a "cool" middle name for my son so he would be happier about his name than I was about mine. FAIL. He hates it. Personally I like the name Sebastien but Sebastian the crab was in full swing due to little mermaid popularity when he was little.
Since Pokemon and digimon were the hit things at the time my then 5 or 6 year old son decided he would change his middle name to Mon. Another child went through a stage of insisting on being called Twinklebell. And my youngest is only 3 but has insisted on being called quite a few names at different times. Recently he insisted on being called "nothing" but has actually settled on his real name for once.

Did you shorten these names to Twink or Twinkie and Not or maybe even kidded him a bit by calling out, 'Not for Nothing'? lolololol
