Plus there are two smelt camp operations in Bowdoinham.

Thanks for all your answers so far everyone. Maybe I should give some more info. As I said we would like to buy land, at least a few acres, and our budget is approx 200k. We would need to be at least within commuting distance of some people for my wifes work. At the same time dont want to be part of the southern maine "explosion". We have lived in really great places that are being ruined by too many people (Asheville). Being close to the coast is not a big deal to us. Belfast sounds good, Farmington may be to secluded?? And again we are looking for organic/ natural food/ medicine. Good, kind, friendly people. Thanks again.

Farmington is isolated. It's ultra-liberal, but it's isolated. I spent a good 2 years there, and it fits the description of everything you're looking for except it's a tiny town in sparsely populated area.
Asheville NC reminds me of Portland to a degree. tiny city that has (in some ways) outgrown itself. Both are artsy, in a beautiful natural setting, and have great reputations. If you don't like Asheville and being near the coast isn't that important to you, then my suggestion of Gorham may not be the best one. Bowdoinham is a good suggestion.

Irfox.... Thanks for the info. Its not that i dont like asheville. I actually love asheville, the problem is if you move outside of asheville itself to a place you can get some land you are just anywhere else in the bible belt of the south(no offense it just not me). I wouldnt mind the coast but its not important either way. Is farmington commutable to anywhere?? I dont imagine theres much work for a psychologist there. Thanks again.

You can commute reasonably (30-40 minutes) to Augusta from Farmington and it's a pretty drive. Lewiston is about 50 minutes and route 4 can be a pain

I would second Hallowell. It's kind of crunchy.
