Default outhouses

I saw this, was going to comment, then realized that my comment would be Off-Topic in that thread.

We were just discussing the possible need for an outhouse here.

I have been told [by the septic design engineer who I hired to design our leechfield] that outhouses are fine in Maine, so long as you first have a septic system with a leechfield. After that then you can go ahead and use an outhouse if you need to.

We are considering an outhouse, primarily for during power outages.

Anyone else?

I'm of the impression that you still need the soils person to do 'work' for the privy. Others probably will know better.

Smile The Outhouse

THE OUTHOUSE

The service station trade was slow
The owner sat around,
With sharpened knife and cedar stick
Piled shavings on the ground.

No modern facilities had they,
The log across the rill
Led to a shack, marked His and Hers
That sat against the hill.

"Where is the ladies restroom, sir?"
The owner leaning back,
Said not a word but whittled on,
And nodded toward the shack.

With quickened step she entered there
But only stayed a minute,
Until she screamed, just like a snake
Or spider might be in it.

With startled look and beet-red face
She bounded through the door,
And headed quickly for the car
Just like three gals before.

She missed the foot log - jumped the stream
The owner gave a shout,
As her silk stockings, down at her knees
Caught on a sassafras sprout.

She tripped and fell - got up, and then
In obvious disgust,
Ran to the car, stepped on the gas,
And faded in the dust.

Of course we all desired to know
What made the gals all do
The things they did, and then we found
The whittling owner knew.

A speaking system he'd devised,
To make the thing complete,
He tied a speaker on the wall
Beneath the toilet seat.

He'd wait until the gals got set
And then the devilish tyke
Would stop his whittling long enough,
To speak into the mike.

And as she sat, a voice below
Struck terror, fright and fear,
"Will you please use the other hole,
We're painting under here!"

Outhouses are legal in Maine. You don't need a leach field or septic system first.

So either an outhouse underneath the forest canopy.

Or a composting toilet indoors.

Hmm.

No power?? They have these really cool places called HOTELS for those inconvenient times. That is where I spent the ice storm 12 years ago. Drove (er, make that slid) from WTVL to S. Portland, checked into the Comfort Inn by the Mall and had a lovely 3 day vacation until the power was back on at my house.

When I first met my DH, he had a camp out in the boonies on paper company land. It had an outhouse. I went there twice. We sold the camp. Ick.

I'm sure none of this comes as a surprise to any of you There is a very good reason why I'm known as The Princess

If you have livestock this is a much less practical solution, especially if you don't have relatively close neighbors and an emergency stock-tending agreement...

The one about my grandfather was that the woman had a few children with her and when she ask - the old coot ask her if she was going to buy any gasoline, when she said no, he told her that she could not, to move along...
