Glad to hear the crop was harvested. It's getting "bitter" out there.

Winter (only my point of view) has changed.

Some winters act as they should. They come in November and leave by March. But we get those late "bloomers" or drag outs.
When I was a young girl in the 70's Winters were big and when they left... they went out quick.

In other words, do not attempt to take a tractor or any piece of machinery across your local lake on 2 inches of ice.

The ice you drove on was either in puddles or in shallow areas where neither the tractor nor its operator would be in danger when the tractor broke through, right?

We've always gone by, walk on 3 - drive on 6. We'd drive on with a 3/4 ton pickup loaded with ice fishing gear, an ATV or a sled in the back and there were times when I was more than just a little uncomfortable. I'm always more comfortable driving on 12".

Another little tip, if you're going to drive on the ice ALWAYS crack the windows on your vehicles. Leaving the windows down a little will allow you to open the door and escape if you do happen to go through the ice.

You are exactly correct. Sorry for any confusion.

2" of ice on an open piece of water will not hold up a vehicle.

I travel along the 'outskirt' of a swamp. My road has areas that have water cutting across. Sometimes it's a foot deep.

mainebrokerman has a brilliant future

"winter" to me,,is january and febuary, yes in november and december, it does get cold and snow at times, but the ground usually isnt frozen yet, and its the holidays, the days seem to fly right by up to christmas.
jan and feb are the coldest two months and usually get the big snow accumulations, tho march can be harsh too,,but there will be some days it does seem to warm a bit.

winter to me,,,is when the lakes freeze up..we can go snowmobiling, or even sliding (with young ones) down a steep hill, when your car battery barely turns over, and you let it(your car) "warm" up for 20 minutes before headin out,,,when you go get some firewood, and the wind (cold) goes right thru you,,but you know its toasty inside , so you dont complain
when you go outside at night, and tho its so cold your nose is freezing,,but you take a minute and gaze at the stars in wonderment,,,,how bright and close they appear,
you think of all the times when its soooo hot in the summer (over 80) and remembering how you complained it was too hot,,,,but wished you were back there...

winter is when,,,you see all the little jobs around the house,(and outside),and think how ambitious you'll be in the spring to get them done,,"but its too cold outside now"

most of us have weathered many winters, but no two are alike, and we marvel at the smallest things,,,how the sun shines and reflects (colors) off an ice covered branch,,,how close the moon looks,,,and where did all these chick-a-dee's come from?
we talk about the weather, but dont complain, we get up at four in the morning,,to clear the driveway, of snow,,,but dont complain,,,we are glad we arent the roadcrew guys working all night plowing the roads, we give ourselves 20 extra minutes to get to work,,because traffic will be slower in foul weather
we are glad we didnt procrastinate too long about stacking the wood undercover (before it snows)

winter affects us differently as we age,,, tho christmas seems to "come out of no-where" the next 2-3 months seem to go so slow,,,,winters seem to get longer the older you get,,

we think back to what winters meant for us growing up,,,some folks had it very harsh,,,but the generation before them, even harsher

we take precautions, ,,,salting the front steps and driveway, (to reduce slips) we have a bucket of sand in the garage,,,for the icy driveway,,,we "winterize" the house,,,put plastic over some windows,,,caulk some window edges, (and door frames)to reduce the amount of cold air flow coming in,,

as a kid, winter meant ice skating,,,snowball fights, and of course school,,and winter sports,,

sometimes winter means different things on different days,,some days,,when the wind-chill is 20 below zero,,,,you feel like throwing a brick at the tv in the mention of global warming
but the very next day,,,you may be out cross-country skiing and loving it,,,
tomorrow ...i'll be driving some golf balls across the lake with my son (in front of the house) then retrieving them with the snowmobiles....we may drill some holes with the ice-auger,,and fish,

you know its winter when ,,you say to yourself....its one day closer to spring..

winter starts when the motorcycle is put away cause its too cold to ride or sand/salt on road, and spring starts when the rain washes the sand/salt off the road and I can take the bike out.

Winter is FAR too long.

I haven't experienced a Maine winter for 20 years. There is a lot to love about winter, but I saw this in a magazine years ago and it fit my feelings perfectly:

30 days hath September, April, June, and November. All the rest have 31, except February, which has 90.
