Default How will you spend your dash?

A friend sent this to me today. It sure made me think about what is important and what is not. So many things get left until later because I am busy now taking care of or worrying about things that in the end won't matter.

I saw this right after my best friend died---someone who didn't even know him, only knew of him, organized a few moments for thoughts and reflections at a Geocaching event here in Maine last January a week after he was killed. He played this as part of that time... and we were told about it later and went looking for the video. The impact was huge because for him, his friends and two special cousins were really his family, yet because he died with no will... his property did not go where he wished, and his wishes for cremation and burial were not followed. We all knew his wishes, what he wanted, but he'd never written anything down. We were all reminded that those that had the property and some of his cherished possessions, and made the decisions about cremation, no burial, etc, never had the most important parts of his *life*, all of the events that made up the dash. So, while they had the two dates, those of us who loved him and knew him really had the best part of him. It's a wonderful reminder....

I was down Saco for a funeral and DW and I stopped in DD to get some coffee. There was an old guy, thick Quebecois accent, there and he came over to talk to us. Never met him brefore. He started talking to us and telling jokes which was good; eased our stress a bit. He said he'd been to a dance (had to be in his 80s) and was talking to a woman he knew there. He asked her when she passed and was lying in a coffin at the funeral home with all her friends and aquaintances walking past, what would she like them to say about her? She said "that i was a good wife, mother, friend, all that. Nice things". She turned away and he tapped her elbow and said "Now ask me." So she did (he made her ask the whole schpeil just like he did) and asked what would you want them to say? He sat pointing toward an imaginary coffin and said "LOOK, HE"S MOVING!"

He had no idea why we were there but he made us laugh so hard others were staring at us. It was the best tonic he could have given us. Still go looking for him when we're down that way.

Very nice... kind of makes us all want to stop and smell the roses, doesn't it?
