As well as how many people really do that. And why it's necessary legally to have your name written on the side of your shack. (oh i guess that's self explanatory)

I don't know what the daily fine is for leaving a shack on too long but I do know it's $500.00 if it goes out with the ice! It's also $60.00 for not having your name on the side (ask me how I know this!). I have seen more than one shack floor left on the ice after the shack was chainsawed off from the top and removed. There is still a fine for leaving the floor but usually no way to prove who owns it. I have known people who remove their name from a shack and just let it go if it gets frozen in too much.
Now-a-days the warden will visit periodically and document the names on the shacks. That way when he returns and yours is still there with the name removed he has enough proof to fine you.

All that is necessary is to lift the corners and stick a 2x4 or two under the shack then shovel snow around the shack to "bank it" and cut off the wind.
If you fail to do this the shack will flood, freeze and you will have 6" or more of ice in the shack rendering it useless and impossible to use until spring thaws it all out. Many "newbies" learn this lesson the hard way. We will celebrate MLK Jr. Day tomorrow fishing for smelts!

When we first put our shack on there was no snow on the ice and the wind was gusting to 30 mph that day. This kid was down there trying desperately to hold on to his shack while cutting the racehole with a chainsaw. Every few minutes the wind would gust and away went his shack. He'd drop his saw and go running after it,haul it back, and start cutting the hole again. He must have done this five or six times by the time we pushed our shack to where we wanted to be. The poor kid was exhausted and sat on a piece of ice while we prepared to cut our hole. He watched as the first thing I did was chisel out a small hole find a stick, wrap rope around it ,drop it in the hole, and secure it under the ice. I then tied this to our shack so it wouldn't blow away. the kid saw me do this and remarked at what a good idea it was....yet he didn't follow suit and had to retrieve his shack four or five more times before he got the hole cut. He finally got it set in place and piled the foot tall ice blocks around it to freeze in place and hold the shack in place. By then we had our hole all cut and had secured all four corners with the same method as the first. I brought him a few pieces of rope and told him he needed to tie the shack down even with the ice blocks. He just nodded and tossed the rope aside. A few minutes later a huge gust of wind picked his shack right up ,flipped it over the blocks and he hollered as it became airborne and slammed into the side of another shack knocking that one off its sled and sending both of them down the ice. He ran to stop them and finally caught up to them. We helped him haul them back and reset them only this time we insisted he tie down his shack while we watched!

He was just a kid so we cut him some slack. What puzzled us was why he was so reluctant to tie down the shack after he saw it work so well for us???? We certainly didn't hold a patent on the idea!!

Hey I am taking notes. So I don't look like a total rookie, maybe a slow learner, not a rook
