Smelts are a light delicate white fish. Very fresh smelts smell like fresh cucumbers or watermelon. They are kind of small, a bit bony but the bones are so small you can just eat them. They are a Christmas Eve tradition in many Italian homes. They are not "fishy" tasting like cod can be, They taste more like halibut. We clean them, leave the tails on , roll them in flour or cornmeal and pan fry them in about 1/4 inch of oil. You lay the cooked smelt on it's back, pull out the backbone then just eat the whole thing ,tail, fins and all!The tail gets crunchy like a potato chip. They're really quite good!
Smelts were a real treat when we were kids. My brother was a skinny minni when he was young but my father always said the kid could eat his weight in smelts!

Not only on the edge of my seat, but biting my nails!
I'm sorry, I just can't bring myself to eat them. I can't get past the smell of them cooking. Now when the guys in the camp next to you come drop one down your smoke stack, that's always quite pleasant.

Yup there's always a few pranksters around. We don't have a stove pipe anymore.
A nit wit we know thought he was dumping water down my brother's chimney once. It was Kerosene and he damn near killed my buddy in the shack when he dumped some down the chimney! My friend was lucky only his down coat caught fire. Burned the shack to the ice in anout 5 minutes. We got revenge a bit later. Smelt Wars!

i drove through an ice shack some years back with my sled.it was parked in the middle of the trail on moose head, middle of the night no reflectors on a white ice shack didnt see it till i was right on it.hunkerd down and hung on.im glad it was cheaply built.the owner couldnt get it off the trail so he left it.he had to pay a big fine and fix my sled.

I think that must of been one of those new trail toll booths I've heard about, although maybe it was a Moosehead Starbucks drive-thru!
