Hey Casper, how are you guys making the trip? Are you driving with a do it yourself moving truck like U-Haul or are you hiring a moving truck?

Here are some stats for you:
Calais, ME: Population in July 2007: 3,215
Our Town, TX: Population in July 2007: 7,995
Calais, ME: Estimated median household income in 2007: $30,442 (it was $24,623 in 2000)
Our Town, TX: Estimated median household income in 2007: $29,222 (it was $24,164 in 2000)
Calais, ME: 2008 cost of living index in Calais: 90.8 (less than average, U.S. average is 100)
Our Town, TX: 2008 cost of living index: 84.6 (That's a fairly insignificant difference.)
Calais, ME: High school or higher: 84.6%
Bachelor's degree or higher: 11.5%
Graduate or professional degree: 4.0%
Unemployed: 7.8%
Mean travel time to work: 14.1 minutes
Our Town, TX: High school or higher: 62.2%
Bachelor's degree or higher: 7.1%
Graduate or professional degree: 2.6%
Unemployed: 7.7%
Mean travel time to work: 30.3 minutes
Calais, ME: 5 registered sex offenders living in Calais, Maine in early 2007. The ratio of number of residents in Calais to the number of sex offenders is 643 to 1.
Our Town, TX: 100 registered sex offenders in 2007 (Hmmm, that's WAY more than 2 1/2 times to compensate for the population difference!) The ratio of number of residents to the number of sex offenders is 80 to 1.
Goodness gratious! Those are some very interesting statistics, considering all we've heard about the poverty conditions, high unemployment, cost of living and poor education system in the area.

Amen, EL!
Rajen, thought I answered this one for you. We're feds, so they're moving us. Sounds a lot better than it actually is. They send us up on a house hunting trip, which we're taking next week. They'll send people to pack our stuff, load the truck and unload it when we get to Calais. They even help with stuff like closing costs if we can find a buyer for our house, and with closing again if we find a house to buy within a specified period of time. We fully intend to take advantage of that, if we can. I guess they want to make sure that once they move you, you stay.

Just wanted to let everyone know that we got final word, and I got the job at Calais Regional Hospital. We are set to leave here on February 15th. We will be spending 2 days visiting family on the way but other than that we will be driving like a bat out of hell. Can't wait!!
