We had a pretty nice skating rink in Topsham too. It is still there and maintained by the town rec dept. This was one of the only school night activities outside of school that was allowed after dinner time. We had an 8:00 curfew. The few surrounding neighborhood kids would all meet there at night and skate our hearts out. The boys would use half of the rink for hockey using their boots as goal posts. The girls would use the other half trying to learn how to do twirls, spins and jumps. Toward the end of the night, having worked up a pretty good sweat we had all abandoned our coats, jackets, mitten and hats in a heap in our little wooden warming hut.
Do you remember what you felt like when you finally figured out how easy it was to skate backwards?

They used to turn most of the park on Maine St in Brunswick into a skating rink with no hockey allowed, ever. It was the best place to skate! And yes, skating backwards turned out to be so much easier than I ever thought it would be, but then again so were simple jumps and spins. This was back in the mid-60's. So much fun!!

I think you and I have crossed paths more than once in life. Somewhere between Waterville and Brunswick!
There is still no hockey allowed on the mall in Brunswick. Hockey is played on the Lishness Field rink off of Jordan Ave.

Considering that I can barely stay vertical when skating forwards.. I'll be on the sidelines with the hot cocoa for you!

I bought my Tubb Mountaineers at Gorham Hardware just across the line in N.H. They were 20% off the SSP on their website.
All the local foresters buy them there.
Only trouble is when you are snowshoeing on hard packed snow, they are real loud so that's when I haul out the trusty wood Tubbs that were manufactured in South Paris 50 years ago.

One of the things that I was disappointed with when we moved to Maine, was a lack of winter school sports.
In our travels previously, we had seen areas where the high school had a ski club and competitions, all sponsored by local family ski slopes.
I thought there would be hockey in the schools too.
Our youngest son did really like attending Old Town High school. And he got very involved with track and ROTC.

I think so too
Jordan Ave! I could NOT remember the name of the street when I was typing last night, but then again, it was back in the 60's, LOL.
I'm glad to know that they still have seperate rinks. Makes skating a lot more fun when you don't have to dodge flying hockey pucks.
