Orono is just North of Bangor about 15 minutes. The Alfond is another 10 from the exit onto Stillwater Ave. Nice place but, yeah, a far piece from here dramamama

I guess the Alfonds arena is fairly close to us then. I had not heard of it before, we should check it out sometime.

Our youngest son did really like attending Old Town High school. And he got very involved with track and ROTC.

Little late with the reply here, but I am surprised at this too. Even where I grew up in Massachusetts, many of the schools had ski clubs and cross country ski clubs and teams. It even meant driving (or being taken by bus) 2 hours to the nearest ski area (Wachusett Mountain) to do, but they did it a few time every week. Now, budgets may have eliminated this from some schools, but most still play hockey at least.
Indoor track seems to be popular. My girlfriend did indoor track at Scarborough H.S. (as well as X Country and Spring Track). The swim teams seem to enjoy themselves too, but most schools here don't have pools which makes scheduling meets and practices at local YMCAs and community center pools a bit difficult.
Almost any town with a rec center or local college or university does well though. Farmington's Health and Fitness Center was open to the public and they had a bunch of activities for everyone. I also think it's cool that Portland has the snowboard park in town during the winter.
Check out open swims at the local YMCA or Community Center. I know Portland has them every weekend and they're well attended. it's cheap and fun for the family. I know the Riverton Community Center (Forest Ave, not far from Riverside St/ the Westbrook Line). and Reiche Pool (West End) offer open swim every Saturday and you don't have to be a city resident or member of any group to do it.

Orono HS has a diving coach and Old Town has a pool; so they get together and have a diving team, which gets a lot of awards. But it constantly is argued over.
In our last town the high school had a fencing team and I coached [I used to compete in Foil Fencing long ago]. there is very little of that here. Which is what I rather expected.
I did expect to see ski clubs and cross country ski clubs and teams, and hockey.

when i moved downeast from the western side of the state, i was a little disappointed with the school sports situation as well- its been coming along tho. WA has a football team and wrestling team now, more of the local schools are able to provide baseball and softball programs at the junior high level. we dont always have enough for some teams, but usually if there is a parent that is willing, the kids will come out to at least check it out. and then there is always the money issue- there just isnt enough money in the budgets to fund a lot of teams, especially at an interscholastic level.
i dont see hockey in the near future downeast, the only rink i know of is in the calais area. although in the lewiston area i knew people who had rinks in their backyards- so i guess anything is possible if someone came along and really wanted to see a hockey team start up. and the way the rivalry stuff goes around here, if one school got a team, others may follow.
