Winter family fun in maine
For all of the newbies headed to the state and those of you looking to move to the state and for all that didn't know what was in your backyard, there are a wide variety of wonderful activities to keep you and your family busy throughout the entire winter season.
Check this out. Maine Chevrolet Derby - Maineās Largest and Richest Ice Fishing Derby
This is a state wide event that doesn't just involve ice fishing. Although the kids derby's are a great way to get them involved at an early age.
This event runs throughout the rest of the season and on many lakes from Sebago all the way up through Aroostook County.
There are also ice racing competitions at these events, YES WE DO DRIVE ON THE ICE! As well as radar runs for those into snowmobiling. There will be vendors at these events and prizes worth over $60,000.
Do you ski? Would you like to learn to ski? Check out some of the best ski resorts on the East Coast, all the way down to small local town family operated business's. Whether you're already living in Maine, new to the area or considering a move to Maine, why not take advantage of what we have to offer.
SkiMaine
These areas offer a lot more than just skiing. Snow tubing is a great way for the entire family to enjoy a nice fun filled afternoon. Many of these areas also offer an out door ice skating rink.
Downhill not your thing? Check out the cross country areas that offer a wide variety of scenic trails for you to enjoy and get some exercise at the same time.
Get out there, go explore and ENJOY!

My goal is to do tons of tubing and tobboganning(sp?) once we're up. My coordination skills should never be combined with a set of skis!!!

Great link to the fishin derby. Love the pictures from last years events. It looks like they built an ice castle.
I see there is going to be an ice fishing shack contest. I bet some of those will be quite impressive!

oh great idea for a thread Mermaid!
There is an amazing program out there for kids too: WinterKids 5th, 6th, and 7th Grade Passport
Hills become a place to go sliding, lakes and ponds, and even some rivers, become great places to skate. And the beaches shouldn't be overlooked either--the ocean, the tidal pools, and the beach becomes a completely different experience in the winter. One of my very most favorite things to do is build forts and tunnels.... although one of our tunnels had a cave in the other day!

Seeing as how I'm probably a good bit older than most of you, I plan to spend my winter time watching everybody do all these fun activities. I do downhill ski and I will probably do more of that when I get there. I learned to ski on Snowshoe Mountain here in WV and I don't expect any of the ski resorts in Maine to be much harder. But my bones are getting a bit brittle so I'm thinking I'll just have a hot beverage and watch everyone have fun out my window or wherever I am. I can have a really fun time living vicariously through others.

I wouldn't mind learning to how to get around on snowshoes - we'll give it a try when we get there if someone will help us learn.
