I've never seen any indication of NH not being pet friendly. But then if you come this way you only spend 1/2 hour there anyway w/one rest area.
I can telll you how I get from Dayton Ohio to Eastport (Daughter and family stationed there). Gets compklecated; got a pencil & paper?
We left and went nthh from Dayton to Akron on I-71. Then made a right arond Akron south side on I-76 to I-80.
Took I-80 all the way across Pennsy to I-81 to Scranton-Wilkes Barre, Pa. Then I-84 across through NY, Conn. I-84 into the <Mass Pike (I-90) to I-290 around Worcester Mass. Pick up I-495 above there and follow the signs to Maine on I-95.
If you want some cool mounytain driveing and interstate that goes through mountains take I-70 from dayton tothrough Pennsy to Harrisburg and I-81. DW and I thought the road was very pretty in winter but would be a lot less anxious in spring/summer.
Probably too complicated and someone will have a better idea but there you have it. Safe travels Jolly.

I've been driving from West Virginia to Maine for over 15 years and have tried several routes and some (so called) shortcuts. From Harrisburg to Maine, I follow exactly the same route that tinbender just described.

THANKS! Spose, Drama (hope I don't sleep most of the way), mensaguy, and of course Tinbender; IF I bring the bus, I'm waiting 'til the snow melts - heck, I'll probably wait for no snow anyway so I don't pucker the whole way.
How long did it take mensaguy & tinbender?

It takes mensaguy and me about 19 hours - we usually stop for the night somewhere above Hartford, CT. We also travel with dogs and from WV to Maine on the route retiredtinbender gave you starting at I-81, we pretty much know where the pet friendly motels are located. We come up I-79 to I-68 to I-70 to I-81.

Excellent route tinbender. That is the route we use from Florida, once we get on I-81. Keeps you out of the cities, although Hartford can be a pain at times.

Harrisburg to Milford PA (at NY line) -- 3 hours
I-84 across NY -- 1 to 1-1/4 hours
I-84 Across Connecticut -- 2 hours (unless the Interstate snarls up)
Mass border to Kittery Welcome Center -- 2 hours
Kittery to Bangor -- 2-1/2 hours
Bangor to Eastport (via Rt. 9 [the Airline])-- 2-1/2 hours

Hey Jolly, try MSN maps fro the directions. They generally work pretty good. Takes me about 20 hours to drive to Dayton. I usually pull over arounbd Scranton Pa. Mensa hit the numbers perfect. But I'd take I-395 to Brewer, Maine and come down Rt. 1 from there. Pretty coastal scenery and more houses in case of triouble. Granddaughter calls Rt 9 the "road of the never ending forest". 20 minutes quiker if you know the shortcuts but BORING.

The Red Ranch - that was it. We used to drive up there from Lubec to "visit" back in the day. Couldn't for the life of me remember the name of that place. Thanks for bringing it up.

I have travelled at least 20 times from Illinois to Nova Scotia , Canada.. and every time going thru Vermont and New Hampshire has been a nightmare for me to get a room for the night with pets. All my dogs are in cages.. If I happened to find one the cost was absolutely insane It just seems I always seemed to hit that area when I needed to stop driving.. I also remember staying in Ellsworth ,Maine after being turned away by 3 motels I found one for 150.00 a night.. and it wasn't great!!!!
