Don't know much about the hunting, but OOB is the place to go for us. It's close by, (about 1 and 1/2 hours), and there's plenty to do.

id recommend the pemaquid/bristol area, pemaquid has a coastal beach(and lighthouse) and 10 minutes away you can go hunting in bristol, i grew up hunting in south bristol.

I agree with this post. Lincolnville Beach is a little touristy while you still have the areas towards the west that are more favorable for hunting. Searsmont and Appleton are pretty rural.

I've known people that have hunted this area as well. As well as Alna, Whitefield / Jefferson areas.
As far as OOB.... *ick*. OOB IMO, is not an ideal residential area. Too touristy for my taste and regarding seeing people that are leaving that area to go hunting, I'm pretty sure they're traveling a ways to find anyplace where one could hunt unless they were headed out towards Waterboro, Hollis or Shapleigh areas or beyond.

Ya know, I have not posted many times (okay maybe twice) on this forum because I fear the retaliation of defending my town from others. I have been reading this forum for quite some time, have read many posts sighting the great things about where others live, and have never felt the need to come on and add negative comments about what others like in their home towns. I happen to love living in OOB, tourist season and all. Unless you actually know the core of the community, the year round citizens who have taken us under their wing and made us feel like we have lived here forever, how can you judge? Old Orchard is home to many 2nd and 3rd generations of families. I grew up spending my summers visiting relatives in Brownville Jct and swimming in Schoodic Lake, fishing at Johnsons Pond and enjoying all that area has to offer. I always knew I would end up living in Maine. I chose to live in Old Orchard Beach because I love the people and the surroundings. Just because you may not feel the same, please don't discourage others from discovering the things that I have come to love about this town.

You have just as much right as any other regular member here to defend your home town. We all do it. I stated in my previous post that it was just my opinion as did one other regular member. We're all entitled to our opinions, just as you are yours. I didn't see any form of retaliation against your opinion of your town. While you may love it, others here have the right to state they don't and explain why. When I'm in that area and looking for a great slice of pizza and some pier fries, that would be my first stop.
Again IMO, surrounding areas like Pine Point and Scarborough are far more appealing as residential areas than OOB.
We are all loyal to our own particular places in Maine. For further information please search You Tube for YPOM to further my point.
BTW, the OP was asking about a nice coastal town within a close proximity to good hunting as well.
Welcome to the forum, youcanhaveoob.

Hi.
First off, never explain yourself for defending your town... not only do you have every right to do so, most people on this forum would welcome it.
I find that differing opinions (and explanations as to WHY someone feels that way) offer more to the original poster than everyone agreeing. Two opposing view points and civilized discussion about them tends to reveal more about a community than everyone just saying, "yes... it's a fantastic place."
In the case of OOB, I admittedly only spent just under a year in Old Orchard so I can't say I became fully immersed in the community there. I didn't get to see the helpfulness and kindess that you describe (though it wasn't a rude place or a "cold" place by any stretch for me). That being said, most people here can say the same thing about their own town in Maine... it's not exclusive to OOB.
Personal experience in OOB has shown me that it's a dreary place in the off-season... it's cold and due to the vacancy of many of the buildings it feels almost desolate. On top of that, it's transient. Many people are only there for either a cheap winter rental or a few weeks during the summer. It's hard to form long-term relationships outside the core of the community.
The crowds are aggrivating. I love the French Canadians, but many of the people coming domestically or locally couldn't care less about the town and trash the place and act like they own it for the brief time they're there. OOB it's probably the only town in Maine that isn't popular due to it's natural beauty, but is popular due to the fact that people go to party... party towns are inherently prone to being trashed and this is another place where OOB is no exception. It's no Daytona Beach, but it's not a fun place for ME to spend a summer as a result of its crowd. I felt a lack of respect for OOB from outsiders that I've never felt anywhere else in Maine. As much as people like to rag on tourists, they tend to respect places like Bethel, Baxter SP, etc because they are naturally stunning and breathtaking. OOB doesn't have that effect on people. They want to get a week of lounging, mini-golfing, amusement parking, and drinking beer in... not take in the beauty of the place.
As far as hunting, there is hunting within about 1/2 hour to 45 minutes, but it's not as close as many other towns offer in Maine.
If I had to recommend a place NEAR OOB it would be Pine Point or further down in Ocean Park, but OOB is personally just a bit different than what I would look for in a Maine home.
I'm glad OOB makes you happy, and I'm happy you enjoy living there. It's nice when you can find a place that makes you happy. Never feel bad about defending the place you love.

I am sorry if you find my comments negative, however they are my opinion and I find them to be true for me.
OOB is not a place I would want to live. Maybe its fine in the winter, but the whole carnival scene just ruins the beach. Would people without all of the cheap tshirt joints, rides, ect. Most likely. But to me, as a Mainer born and raised, OOB is a tourist trap. And, there isn't much in the way of hunting nearby. (ast I knew that season on tourists is still closed.)
Its not for me and I will defend my right to my opinion just as you will defend your town. My hometown in Maine is right on the coast and great hunting, but I am not giving out that secret. Its got way too many transplants there as it is.

I think I really owe all of you an apology for my crabby post the other day. island mermaid, lrfox and ALisonL, thank you for your kind responses - I would not have blamed you if you chewed my head off! I had just logged off of a debate on another board where I had basically been told "how dare you suggest OOB as a place for visitors to come...."
I love all of Maine, always have, always will. I may not have been born here, but my Mom has hinted that my "roots" started here.
The fact that none of you came back and blasted me for my response shows again just how forgiving and kind Mainers are.
Thank you all again, and I promise to join in some more civilized discussions....I will go eat my humble pie now.....
