I'm surprised no one mentioned good old fashioned BROWN BREAD to go with the beans. Nothing like the smell of that boling on the stove with the smell of the beans in the oven. Now THAT"S Downeast!

I bet it's something else in your mind. My grandmother used corn meal, graham flour, molassess, buttermilk, and raisins along with other stuff. You pour the mixture in a 3lb Crisco or coffee can (that you can't get anymore). DW used a tomato juice can. Put the can in a covered pot keeping the bottom off the the bottom of the pot. As soon as it's done you roll the can to loosen the bread and cut it standing upright with a string. Keep it stacked to keep in the heat and EAT IMMEDIATELY with baked beans! Man ain't that good eatin'.

Nowadays you get it in a can from the store somplaces. Terrible stuff. It gets steamed in a can when you make the real stuff.
