Nope not a desert. Goes with the meal just like a slice of bread or a roll. Sets the beans off just right.

No Brown Bread isnt a dessert...it is a traditional accompaniment for baked beans...it is also delicious thinly sliced; spread with cream cheese;stacked 3 or 4 layers high and then sliced into ribbon style sandiches. But best and most traditional is to have it with beans .... and to use the brown bread at the end to sop up the juice and eat it with a fork....(at least in my home). We always had the one in the can...steamed warm...sometimes with raisins sometimes without.

Sounds like it will be a wonderful party.
If you are having Boston baked beans...we enjoy horseradish sauce and brown bread with them.
Fish chowder is good too. served with the little oyster crackers. 
Corned beef dinner or a boiled ham dinner is a favorite at this house.
