When I told my uncle in San Antonio that I was marrying and moving to Maine, he asked, "isn't that part of Canada?" I guess in some ways he's right!

Except that if you live in Downeast Maine you might feel like you're in the middle of nowhere. You drive North, toward Canada, and you're feeling even MORE like you're in the middle of nowhere. You drop cell phone coverage, there's nothing for miles and miles.
Then you cross the border into Canada, and there are big towns and cities and older ladies all dressed up as if they live in a fashionable city (which they do). Quebec and Maine are so far apart culturally, fashion-wise (!), and every other way (except weather) that it's not even comparable!
And the cold weather thing I mean come on guys, it IS cold. And LONG winter. There's a reason for the questions about cold weather. If you love cold weather, great. But many don't, which may be why you get the questions!

Not so much.
We have not seen anything here lower than -25.
Granted it might get cold sometime, but not lately.

Whenever I'm Downeast it seems as if there are just as many Canadians there as might be in Canada....for that matter, as many as OOB in summer!

We do perpetuate some of the misconceptions, of course.
Some people enjoy living in cities, I will go out of my way to avoid them. I am even considering moving further into the woods.....

I must disagree! I tell people here (Minneapolis) that I'm moving to Maine and they get all teary eyed and say "thats such a great place"! LOL - I guess it because its considerably warmer there in the winter and its near the ocean!
The naysayers I run into ask "Why Maine?" and I reply, "Why Minnesota?". It seems to do the trick and then they start to think.

This is the truth right here! ( with a capital "T" )
Just don't pay attention to what people say, they have their own personal motivations, though they don't often realize it....(even when they love us and think they want the best for us)
