[quote=Northern Maine Land Man;7765116]"about 20 years or so ago, the state required all towns that were required to have a shoreland zoning ordinance (all but about 2) to have a comprehensive plan."
Not true. Many towns choose not to have comprehensive plans. Others tried it, didn't like it and eliminated their comprehensive plans.
i guess i wasnt clear when i said that the state backed off on most of those madates (meaning requiring the comprehensive plan) but that many towns were along in the process and didnt stop- alternately, many did decide not to move forward or rescind.
thank you for fixing my errors- as i said i was working with old info.

Thanks Folks,
I'm beginning to think that Washington County may be the place for us. I'm definitely comfortable with a town that has minimal services (and therefore taxes) as I consider myself to be reasonably versatile and self sufficent. I would like to be within 1/2 hr to 45 mins. of the coast of some manner, bay, harbor, what have you, as well as (again 1/2 hour or 45 mins.) of a reasonable size town with the basic amenities. With those things in mind, can anyone recommend a town/towns that may "fit the bill"? Obviously the lower price per acre the better and I realize it's all subjective depending on the particular plot, but it would definitely have to be below 3-4,000 per acre. Or are my expectations unrealistic?
Thanks for all the input.

I'd look at Perry, Robbinston going noreth from Eastport and East Machias, Milbridge, Gouldsboro going south on Rt 1. Small towns, lower services, near or on the water (bays, rivers), within the timeframe from larger towns like Calais, Ellsworth and the like. Between 2 hours and 1.5 from Bangor. Real estate prices, ergo assessments, are higher in Eastport, possibly Gouldsboro too, come to think of it.

There's a nice piece (6 acres I think) on the SW corner of County road and Barron. Sits high on a hill, slopes to Princes Cove with a great view of Campobello, Treats and Dudly Islands, Lubec, Trescott with southern exposure. Terraced so would make a great spot for a buried house with passive solar. Once the salt works comes down (some day) It would be the best spot in town. Nope, don't own it and no affiliation. Just good at spending other folks money. You're welcome.

mmmm, it is my understanding that stateside folks tend to use 'K' to mean thousands.
$1k, $15k, $156k representing $1,000, $15,000, and $156,000 respectively.
In Italy 5 mill, would be 5,000 Lira. Which is different from 5 Millioni which is 5,000,000 lira. So they use "mill' like we use 'K'.
