Good show but the why are we selling to mills in Canada? Keep the jobs here. Sending raw resources out of the US just makes much more money for the importers. At least mill it here and then you can sell it. The show is call "American" Logger afterall...

Because they ship wood to us too. Its amazing the amount of wood that shifts from country to country. The mill in Skowhegan takes wood hauled from Finland to Portsmouth, then up by rail to Skowhegan. They also take one trainload of round wood from NB every day.

The road was started in the mid 60's and completed in the early 70's.

Great Northern originally built it when rafting enthusiasts forced log drives off the river.

It is a beautiful stretch of road and a great place to see wildlife.

Most of Pellitier's trucks in the Discovery channel's series are geared low to allow them to haul doubles with loads weighing close to 200,000 lbs.

DOT rules do not apply to private roads.

We are glad our northern neighbors buy Maine wood-the paper and dimensional lumber industry is going, going.............

Taken in Portage Thursday. 200,000 pounds of softwood. If it were hardwood a load of this size would be 250,000 pounds. The truck doesn't travel off private roads. Tankratt, yes, Golden Road is privately owned. The trucks have the right of way, the rest of us guests on private property.

Cool Picture M.W. Thanks for posting, Thanks for the inside info 7th, I was wondering how they got by DOT at that weight, I never would have guessed a private road system to that degree. (He said, with head still shaking in amazement)

I thought log truck drivers over hear on the west side were crazy and a breed of there own. Mainer log truck drivers are even more so. Cheers to you all you have my respect, but you are still crazy, even more the the ice road truckers. I take driving on ice rather then 250,000 lbs of logs that are top heavy up and down hills. Man....

I love these shows! Maybe after this season they can do some kind of "Loggers Swap" where the guys from Maine go west and some of the guys from Oregon try out Maine logging. You heard it here first!

The Stud Mill Road runs from Costigan to Baileyville. I think it comes out near Grand Lake Stream or somewhere near that. The Golden Road only has to cross Rt 11 just west of Millinocket. It crosses right into the millyard at Millinocket. The Stud Mill Road is privately owned, but trucks need to travel on state roads to reach either the mill in Baileyville, or Old Town, or where ever they are going...I think Champion or someone had a stud mill on the stud mill road, and hence the name. That would be the only mill they could reach without using some state roads. Because of that you won't see the monster loads on the Stud Mill Rd that the Golden Rd has. The Golden Rd is part of a mass of roads in the northwest part of the state. You can go from Millinocket to Greenville, Ashland, Portage, Daaquam, St Juste, St Aurlie, St Zachory, St Pamphile, Escourte....just to name a few (actually most of the ones I remember) North Maine Woods Inc. has info on the organization of landowners up in that part of the state.
