Mud season: Which boots?
which are best: the LLBean gumshoes (above ankle), or wellington boots (knee length) for mud season?

Depends on whether you are in a very wet area (near wetlands) and if there is heavy snowmelt, with localized flooding. For town wear, obviously the gum shoes would do fine. If you are out in the boonies, you may need something calf-high. Not sure you'd need knee-high for anything short of a flood. The Muck Boot Co, not sold by LL Bean, puts out a nice line of waterproof boots in many heights, including a calf-high barn-type boot.
Rubber boots can develop leaks. Why not buy more than one pair?

Muck boots are the way to go. They cost more than cheap Red Chinese boots, but they last a long time. I even have a pair of low cut Muck Boots like loafers. I can step into them and go to the mailbox in slush. Buy them big enough to wear wool socks. The only down side to any rubber boot is that they don't breathe.

we prefer lacrosse- they make a really warm (you find that is unusual in a rubber boot) high cut boot, great for the boat, clam flats, and mud season. kids even use them as winter boots.

Waders.
Suspenders up over your shoulders, where the boots reach up connect and continues to about chest level.
During fiddlehead season, I just figure that I am going to get wet. 40 degrees, standing in a marsh, with it drizzling, and generally chilly.

Gee, where we go fiddleheading the best picking is in late May. More blackflies than mud.

Preferably chest waders...whatever you wear (I think up to the knees at least) - they should fit well for when you sink, and run the risk of losing your boot to the mud.

Oh, yes. Flopping over in the mud, your waders filling with muddy water does make it interesting attempting to get up again.
Try to avoid doing that.
Waders full of water are slightly difficult to stand up in.
