Bargain -Unappreciated Maine towns - houses
What are some nice towns with cheaper but nice houses. Maybe towns with a poor economy due to mills closing, but could one day prosper?

We heard from friends who moved to Maine about how inexpensive the houses are. But since have heard to beware of homes that seem like a bargain, but turn into a money pit. We looked at some homes while we were there, and that seems to be the case. I would say the houses in Calais would be better described as good values, rather than bargains. Pay a little more and you can get a nice home that would go for more elsewhere. In Baileyville, I saw a couple of wonderful houses at cut-to-the-bone prices, one of them cut to half the original price. We drove by and saw why. The house is great. But the paper mill looms over it like a skyscraper. The house we took is a little more than we wanted to spend, but I think it's going to be worth every penny.

and don't forget, paper mill towns have paper mill odors. You either get used to it - or you don't.

And then there is that. I've never forgotten that smell from going to Canton, NC when my grandfather was in the nursing home there. It's one of those unfortunate trade offs. You hate the smell, but you don't want it to shut down and cause all those people to lose their jobs. There goes the economy, from bad to worse.

I stopped in a mill town many years ago and asked an old timer what that smell was...He said..."Son...that's the smell of money...when the smell disappears...so does the town".....he was right on

Unappreciated Maine Towns - Houses
Try Aroostook County - Northern starting with Island Falls, Dyer Brook, Oakfield, Houlton, Mapleton, Presaque Isle and if you really like it quiet then try Ashland and Portage Lake.

I agree, except drop Presque Isle and substitute Fort Fairfield in it's place. Also Easton is worth a look in that area as well.
