Welcome, csilla.. you'll get lots of friendly mainers with advice. Is there a certain thing you really want to be nearby? Are you intent on being near the mountains, the water, certain amenities?

Sounds like you want the idylic lifestyle. Good land, good farmhouse, good neighbors. But you don't say in here (and before Acadien asks) have you ever been to Maine? We get a lot of people asking fro the same sort of thing but haven't been up for more than a few weeks in August. It ain't Newark. Can you give us some more details about you anfd the family?

Tell us about yourself, where you have lived before and what you thought of those places.
What is your profession?
Do you hunt? fish? hike? boat?
Have you been to Maine before?
Folks really do need to come up and spend some time, Each region of Maine is different.

Consider looking around Kittery ... close to a lot and far enough away to enjoy! Lots of great fishing & hunting!

Your zip code is the only clue to you. Newark, Delaware. 31,000 people. How long have you been there? Who do you know here?

Deborah, I'm not really sure what those questions of YOURS have to do answering Csilla's questions.
Csilla for your money your best bet for small towns would probably be around the Augusta or Bangor areas. I'm not familiar enough with the towns around Augusta to make suggestions, but there are a number of little towns within an hour of Bangor that would probably work for you. One of the easiest things to do to help with your research is to search the threads in this forum for Bangor (or Augusta), and then note the surrounding towns that posters have mentioned. That will help you form some specific questions. I lived in the Bangor area, so I'm partial to that part of Maine. A visit will help narrow things down even further. Good luck!

Nothing like jumping whole hog into 'Maine' now.
Saying Kittery is like say "Well, just dip your toe into Maine, don't go far and don't go near the deep end. Stay within spitting distance of the bridge and no matter what you can run across the bridge and be safe in NH."

true ... yet it is STILL a real nice spot ... somehow I didn't see them going for somewhere like Caribou ... Although it is a real pretty part of God's land too

Kit-ree is a nice area. Mostly the small towns N/E of it. But you're right Forest. It's like dipping your toes in the lake.
Another thing though, too, is if you want to see the real Maine, get off the turnpike. It's good if you're deestination minded but if you want a good look around hit Rt 1 and the by-roads too. Take your time and stop every-so-often, get out and look around towns. But not the stereotyp[ical ones like Freeport, Canmden, Bar Harbor. Look at teh real down home ones, Dammariscotta, Thomaston, Trenton, and such. Get the real feel. Good luck and HAVE FUN.
