Liberty, Jackson
Hello,
These forums are great. As I soon to be moving-to-Mainer, they are very helpful. Can anyone tell me anything about living in either Jackson or Liberty?
Thanks!

I'm sure the locals will have some info, but I thought I'd share that I spent a month or more in Liberty many years ago and I loved it. It is tiny, and about 25 minutes or so from Belfast. I drove into Belfast a few times to pick up stuff and shop at the Co-op.
It is really sweet village and an acquaintance of mine remodeled a real ole place and turned it into a paradise, with a small deck, to watch those amazing Maine skies.
Also I was there at the end of tomato season, and I cooked up gallons of sauce.
I only have the fondest of memories!

liberty...
First of all, are you sure you want to become a Mainer? I've beena mainer all my life, my father's family founded Kennebunkport, and we can't wait to get out of here. If you don't mind 5-6 months of weather in which you can't do anything outside easily, it's a great place. The summer's are beautiful except for the black flies that carry you off. Spring is great except for the knee high mud, which leads to the black flies. Fall is good, only lasts for one month though. Winter..... sucks. It wouldn't be bad if it was just snow, but usually, it's snow covered with ice so you can't do anything in it. Don't forget the wind chill.
Other than that, if you are still interested, I would definatley pick Liberty over Jackson. I'm near both towns now. This area is gorgeous to look at but Jackson is kinda like the butthole of the area. Nothing to do there. Liberty has Lake St. George which is the cleanest lake in the state supposedly and it has a complete slate bottom which is nice. Be prepared it is out in the sticks. You are at least a half hour away from any "civilization" which is Belfast. You are at least 45 minutes away from any real shopping (Kohl's, Home Depot, Old Navy, Gap, etc).
If you can handle the weather here, there is no better state to live (taxes are very high though - highest in the country). People are very nice, schools are good, low crime.
Good luck!

Sorry, but I have to follow that last post with the link to our observations after our March trip. Sounds like a fresh persepective is in order.
"Well, it looks like it's definitely Belfast for us. It offers all the basic amenities and downhome charm that we're searching for. The people of Maine were incredibly pleasant. We thought it very unusual how happy all the locals seemed. I'm very observant, and noticed that everywhere we went, people were happy, smiling, conversing amongst themselves, etc. Every single person we talked to on our visit praised their hometown and state, for that matter. We were told countless times, "You're going to love it here!" This, by the way, was from the people who "can't find jobs" and are very unhappy about the "tremendous tax burden" the state endures. As I knew all along, there are always going to be nay sayers in any group. I think it speaks volumes that a people who are supposed to be so oppressed can be so incredibly happy with their lives. The proof is in the pudding, and boy was it tasty in Maine!"

Beautiful it is !
To Elcarim -
I so enjoy reading your posts, especially since your return home from your visit here ! I've been here over 10 years and one of the things that impressed me the most was that there is a "NO BILLBOARD" law here in Maine, It's so nice not to have those obnoxious billboards marring the beauty of the natual landscape.

I loved Liberty, I found a nice piece of land and I was in escrow to purchase that land. It was right on the lake. However, as it turned out, I could not get a perc test to pass, so I backed out of the escrow.
I did manage to buy a great land in Argyle instead.
We love Maine!
Low taxes, low prices, my wife's job transferred her here with no problems.
The schools are GREAT!
Crime is entirely unheard of, and we are fitting right into the community.
I have learned some lessons, but it has been great!
