Well, I think Watertown is a great little town. My Mum went to school there many years ago. It was an all girls prep school. Oakgrove I think was the name. Now it is a police academy. We went to look at the huge brick building several years ago while passing through. My kids call it a castle. I drove around the back roads for awhile and got lost and then stuck. A Father and son, both farmers, from Vassalboro pulled us out then invited us back to their home to see their hog farm. While we were there, the lady of the house, insisted that we have lunch with them as the kids looked hungry.
A couple years ago I almost bought a farm in Vassalboro but hummed and hawed to long and somebody beat us to it. Great area!
Good luck JerseyGirl!

I am very aware of the job search right now no matter where you live, so I am prepared for that. I have much experience in various fields, but am looking to be going to school right off the bat (or as soon as I possibly can) to get my degree and give my son the life I wish I could now. I checked out UMaine yesterday, but they do not offer online courses (that I have found) or I would be starting immediately.
You might try St Josephs College in Standish, they do on-line and are helpfull during it all. I used them when i was in Atlanta Ga and thought they were good. Or Univ. Maine Machias or Augusta. I think they do some courses on line. Then there's Husson College in Bangor. Not sure if they offer on line courses tho.

Jerseygirl, one of the nice things about Waterville is that you have Thomas College and Colby right in town, plus the community college just 10 minutes north in Fairfield. I'm sure you have seen that as you have searched online for information regarding the area.
If you are a homebody, prefer a quiet life, etc., I think the WTVL area might be a perfect fit for you. You could easily live in Vassalboro, the outskirts of WInslow, Benton, Albion, or Belgrade and still be back in Waterville in a matter of 10-20 minutes.

Try USM... I'm taking 3 courses online from there just to get ahead. Here's a link to their summer program (the earliest you can start): USM Summer Session 2009

Waterville has a population of about 16,000 but from their downtown you might think it was much more. I have a cousin that lives there and she seems to like it. I would suggest you check out the University of Maine's Augusta campus, it's only about 20 minutes from Waterville down the turnpike. When you arrive and want dinner out. I suggest "The Last Unicorn" on Silver St. downtown.
