Ahhh, if only my "swamp" of a backyard garden could be planted this early.

I might suggest looking into the
OLD TOWN, ORONO, Millinocket, Dover-Foxcroft, Milo, Skowhegan, Pittsfield, Hampden, Stockton Springs, Bucksport, Penobscot, Holden, Orrington, or Winterport.
I might also suggest looking into Waterville/Fairfield Area.
My #1 picks would be Old Town, Dover-Foxcroft, Milo, Waterville/Fairfield, Skowhegan ...if you didn't mind the longer drive (Millinocket)

That is really a casting a big net there.
And how do you have so many #1 picks?

Ahhhhh...fly season. Well let me see... we're approaching blackfly season, and those little boogers can not only be mighty annoying, but I remain convinced that a swarm of them could carry off an small ox. One suggestion would be to aquaint yourself with deep woods OFF. Another would be to not wear any hairspray as I've come to believe that any hairspray made is like a Vegas neon dinner sign to Maine blackflies . Once it starts getting hot, they'll go away for the most part. I joke, but really, they're short-lived.
During the hot season, in the deep woods, you will have to contend with deer flies which are also satanic in nature, but certainly not bad enough for me to justify not going out into the woods after a long winter of sleeping on my woodstove.
All kidding aside, I wouldn't consider Maine a swamp with an uncontrollable fly population. Yes, they can be bad sometimes, but there is a plethora of products available to help get through the various seasons.

Welcome to Maine
The good things about Maine far outweigh the negative things. I think your tax info has been answered. It's a great place to raise children - you can feel safe walking with your kids down the streets and in the stores with no worries. The schools in Maine are great and have a lot to offer.
The negatives in my mind are the state income taxes and the winter weather. I have a low tolerance to cold, medically, so it is hard for me here in the winter. If you like snow and don't mind bundling up you can't beat it here. You won't find a nicer place to raise a family and enjoy nature than Maine.
With that all said, we are moving to the South because of how hard the winters are on me. We have a lovely cape on 5 acres that allows goats, fenced in yard as well as separate dog area in the country but close to everything and 18 miles from Bangor if you are interested. Just send me a PM and I will send you the link!
Good luck!
Kathy

I can not really comment much on Maine's income taxes [ no bone in that dog fight].
I am so sorry to hear of your medical issues. I pray that you can find healing.

hi...im also moving to Bangor...i am certain that the weather will be an adjustment.(being from deep south) but ive heard so much good about school system..esp. special needs..my little fellow is special needs.i spoke to the head of the special ed. dept and he sounds awesome..he is up to date and very open to matching my son to the school/programs that will help him most...i feel very lucky to be able to make this move now with the economy..but i cant not do what is best for my child...overall everyone i have spoken with has been helpful as i have done as much as i can from here..i have seen some great housing possiblities for us..both temp. for when we first arrive and then for long term as wel..i am so hopeful that my son will not only get his needs addressed with school..but socially he has been rejected here..and i look forward to a more progressive state who dont write off the disabled practically from birth...he is very high functioning but has never been included..he has never even been on a field trip...these children are warehoused here...i was stunned when i was at his school to see that the few kids like him dont even partisapate in a fire drill..they are taught to ignore the alarm..when i asked why..its always the standard answer.."we feel they face so much already, why add the stress of a firedrill or an assemble or PE with others...its not these kids..its the teachers who find it less to bother with..why take them out on a fire drill..or let them partispate in a school activity..it makes their eazy days easier...i know it sounds hard to believe..but its true..and worse..so again im grateful with all my heart to find Maine..and Bangor who actually help these children have a life..we arrive in a few days and i have the same great sense of excitment as my child....thanks to so many who write so many details..it helps so much..thank you

Wow, we had nearly the same experience when we lived in Washington state with our youngest son in public-funded schools there.
After many moves to many areas we finally got to Maine for him to attend highschool in Maine. It was wonderful! Here they really did work with him, and he blossomed.
Our experience with the schools here has been that they are much better with the spec ed students.
I wish you luck in your move to Maine.
