Scientific reason is it's the moist side of the tree's bark because the sun's in the Southern sky.

Elcarim, you job is to settle this friendly argument...see if you can find North by looking at the moss on the trunks of trees.
I've personally seen randy moss up in Foxborough before. Hope that helps.

Sounds like you are having a great time El! You've probably seen more of Maine than I have, and I'm a native I don't do the woods.

"Amendment A --if on a logging road, the log trucks have the right of way"

Another point; When you are on a logging road or skidder trail all forks point toward civilization. If you think about it, logging trucks and skidders pulling long logs cannot make U-turns. The point at an intersection points toward food, gasoline and warm places.

As to toilet paper, in the woods I use paper towels or industrial strength toilet paper. Cover it up with leaves or needles and it will be gone very quickly.

I read a story recently of two little boys, I think they were eight years old, that got lost in the woods. They followed the river and found their way out. Where there's a river, you'll eventually find civilization. Pretty sure it was in the BDN.

Make sure you are in a Sunny section of woods. If that is the case then yes moss does grow a LITTLE bit more on the North side, but if you are in the middle of the willy-wags then all bets are off as to which side it will grow on. There are enough variables that I wouldn't want to try to find my way anyplace using the moss trick. Too risky.

hmmmm....I've taken quite a few pics of moss in the woods. My favorite subject - moss on tree trunks. I haven't checked to see which way I was facing when I took the shots. There isn't much sun in the woods on any side! I'll have to pay more attention next time we're out. That will be Saturday. We'll be geocaching on the way back from the canoe races.

The first time I met the 8 year old he was 3. He'd been in the car with his mom and his Spongebob Squarepants fishing pole. He had Plankton on for bait. All was well and good until he cast it out the car window. He's a cool kid!
