Thank you.

Now come to find out, both of their wills were over 20 years old. His had her as his executor; while she had the eldest daughter [new desist] as her executor.

So it goes to the state, to decide who will be the executor. Then a month for that executor to be bonded, then 3 months for public notices asking folks to step forward if anyone has any outstanding liens against the estate. Then a discussion can be had to decide how things can be handled.

Folks; get a will. If you already have a will, update it every decade.

Forest, I'm so sorry for everything. Hopefully the state won't drag things out.

Even with wills in place, things can get complicated. My mother was sort of obsessed with dying and what would happen to her estate. But she wouldn't get a will. She did mention what she wanted from time to time so we had a pretty good idea of what she wanted. When she had a stroke, we knew she didn't want to be kept on life support. We knew she wanted my nephew to have her house. (My kids were furious, but it was her house) and she had saved enough money to pay for her funeral. My brother and I just left it to our sister. She's sort of a control freak, but she's also very good at taking care of things. So we let her handle things any way she wanted.
Sorry that things are not going as easily for you. As if you don't have enough to deal with. Just take it a day at a time, and eventually it will all be easier to live with.
