My main employer treats me well. I get good pay, and benefits. My local bosses stink.
I don't work for any of the companies you listed....
I'm a federal employee.

Pratt & Whitney has had 2 layoff's in the last few months and I don't believe they are hiring at this time. The parent company, United Technologies, recently annouced that there would be a work force reduction across all divisions of 11,600 jobs. Not sure how this will effect the Maine plant though. In the next year or so it doesn't look like there will be much hiring but there are some major engine programs which will be kicking in 2 to 3 years from now which could generate new job positions.

with more unemployment and overseas competition for cheap goods, good benefits (healthcare, and dental) and good pay, would seem harder to come by, however i do believe thier are some vocations, that will pay very well with good bennies for a long time to come,,, pharmacists, nurses, and teachers come to mind,,i mention teachers, because even tho the pay not be topnotch, they do have summers off, and comparably, decent job security
years ago, an unskilled laborer in maine ,,had options of getting a job at a mill, or factory,,,decent pay and security,, but many mills and maine have gone vacant, and maines' labor force has moved in the direction of service jobs.
i still believe in the american dream, that is someone works hard enough, thier is no ceiling to achievement, but you got to have initiative, some creativity and goals(and drop your fear of failure)
i had co-workers in the past....that loved to do landscaping,, so they went door to door in town, offered the first free (lawn mowed) and all the sudden, this fella had calls coming in to do it every week, and to build rock walls.. that led to doing it full time,, and he's doing very well, (still)
saw the same thing with painting houses, building steps, flooring/garages, etc
i mention this only because, thier is still opportunity, to do something on your own, many of us are living proof, it can happen,,,just make your own path, no need to follow the masses and dont allow the fear of failing to anchor you
if you cant find a good paying job, with bennies, then at least look at a way you can be your own boss

ahh, but peachie, you are doing something you like, and are good at,,,i've seen employees vomit before they come to work, because they hate the boss or job so much....
its funny,,, most hourly workers dream of owning thier own businesses someday,,,,grass always looks greener,,,,and many folks that do own thier own business, and put in 70 hours a week,,,often wish they had a "regular" job..
i admire business owners, they where many hats,,,,they cant "punch out" and leave the worries or work to be done behind.

That was me 20 years ago. Today I walked around the greenhouses, pond and market garden with KiddinAroundFarm and her DH in bare feet, under the sun. The worst I can say about the day is that I'm a little sunburned. I spent a few hours teaching in bare feet today. I really do have a splinter under my fingernail and I do work in unforgiving weather but I wouldn't trade it for the world. I know Peachie wouldn't either.

My company pays me about 25 cents an hour, of I'm lucky. I am responsible for my own health coverage and retirement plan.
So it goes! Oh ya, there's that quality of place the Disgustacrats keep telling me about.
