Default Maine camping ideas...

My wife and I are trying to plan a camping trip to Maine this summer with out two kids. We're looking for a camp ground on or near the coast which offers cabins fo rent, hiking trails, and close to a beach area where the kids can look for sea shells and do other adventurous things (like swimming in the cold water). Whe would like to get up around the central part of the State and avoid southern Maine as much as possible. Any camp sites we should check out? I appreciate all the help and advice in advance.

Did you mean "with out two kids" or did you mean "with our 2 kids"? It's a little confusing to me.

You may want to try the Belfast, Camden, Rockport area. One I can think of that has cottages, is Colonial Gables. Here's a link to give you a starting point to look at a few places in that area.

Check this handy-dandy little link out- it's all the state campgrounds in Maine and you can search by location and/or amenities. I'm thinking you might be particularly interested in Camden Hills SP and Lamoine SP, but there are plenty of others, too!.

Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands

ETA: Oops..I didn't realize you wanted cabins. These were mostly for tenters and RVs.

It's a typo but then again I'm sure you know that already. With OUR two kids. Any input other than being confused?

Good recommendation. We have tents and after pricing cabins we're thinking that tents are the way to go. We really like Campden Hills. Has anyone here camped there before? How far is it from the beach? How are the shower/rest room facilities? Thanks again for the info.

We've camped at Megunticook campground in Rockport a few times over the years. Nice location. They have a website.
