Default Law enforcement In Southern Maine

I am currently a full time College police officer in Massachusetts. I want to move to Maine so bad I can taste it. However I do have a question. Can a person with a family live comfortably on a police salary in Maine? I am struggling now where I am. my ultimate goal is Maine State Police but would be happy working in a city or town also. I am not happy at all in Mass. and am ready for a change. I love the midcoast area, have been vacationing there for 37 years, but my wife would only move to southern Maine( midcoast is too far from her family here). Any information would be greatly appreciated. thank you.

You will probably find police salaries to be lower here than in Massachusetts and the cost of living to be higher. You need to contact both the Maine State Police and local police departments to get their salary schedules and hiring opportunities. Probably the best bet is for you to make a trip up to Maine and go and visit some of the police departments in southern Maine. Begin with the City of Portland and go from there.

Maine State Police

Recruits while in the Academy receive a salary based on a yearly rate of $34,528.60. After graduation from basic law enforcement training, troopers receive salary based on an annual rate of $36,025.60 which progresses through seniority steps to $46,592.00. Overtime is paid at one and half times the basic hourly rate for time worked beyond an assigned shift. The value of State paid Health and Dental insurance is $310.74 biweekly. The value of the State's share of employee's retirement is 26.35%.

Port Authority of New York and New Jersey

Three sergeants with annual base salaries of $103,760 were the biggest earners:
* La Guardia Airport-based Thomas Hoey raked in $154,495 in OT.

* Laurence Goldberg, also based at La Guardia, billed $138,262 in OT.
* Nicholas Kowana, assigned to PATH, took in $133,378 in OT.

But while supervisors topped the list, some cops also collected big:
* Canine handler Brett Porigow added $122,007 to his $86,467- a-year job checking luggage, cargo and passengers for explosives at La Guardia.

* And John Zultanky, a PA Police Academy firing-range instructor, made $118,125 beyond his $86,467 salary.

Ralph Berlangieri made $102,700 last year. He's not an executive or a lawyer or an engineer. He's a Port Authority gardener who cares for trees, shrubs and flowers at Newark Airport.

This gardener rakes it in - along with 50 cops at 200G

Top-paid individuals included police Sgt. John Rienzie ($270,200);
Officer Frank Gato ($255,900);
electrician John Manbretti ($124,000);
plumber John Santoro ($119,000);

Maine is the place to live, NY / NJ is where the money is.

Tough choice, but money pays the bills and buys the toys................

From everything I have seen and heard salaries will tend to be lower in Maine.

The 'cost of living' will generally be lower as well. Obviously that is a big generalization. Some regions of Maine are more expensive, while some regions of cheaper.

Southern Maine does appear to cost more than most of Maine. It is hard to say where the best opportunitys are though.

Good luck.

Stick to the larger metropolitan areas and you will do fine. We don't get the detail's like mass so we cant pad our salery with and extra 50k like they do down there.. but we get OT from time to time, have a better retirement plan than Ma, and decent working conditions.

Send me a DM and I can be more specific...but generally you can expect 50k with standard amount of ot through court and stuff..with in 5 years...Portland guys are making more and supervisors pf course more than that.. No civil service exam here....just apply to the dept of your choice. If you have Ma certification that is worth its weight on gold...dept's here are struggeling to find certified guys so they dont have to pay for the academy.

Thanks, Huck. Everybody wants the cops to be there when their rights are being violated, but they want them to look the other way when they want to bend the law to suit themselves. These poor guys just can't win. If they speed on the highway, they're abusing their authority, but if they drive the speed limit, and everybody SLOWS DOWN to keep from getting pulled over, the cop is holding up traffic. And then people wonder why the cops have become jaded.
