Looking for an Apartment in Orono/Old Town/Bangor area
I am a graduate student at UoM at Orono and moving in there with my family. We have a nine year old daughter and looking for a 2 bedroom apt in family oriented quite neighborhood close to the campus. We are from Toronto and would appreciate any suggestions.
Thanks

There are a lot of them to choose from.
Just try to avoid the mad rush during the beginning of the fall semester [about 2-weeks in the fall as students grab up every apartment available].
Right now is a good time for apartment shopping.
If you go for Old Town-Orono then you can do a great deal via bicycle.

None that I would recommend.
The Bangor paper and Old Town paper list apartments. The Bangor paper is online. The Old Town paper is not online.

Also, try to contact the Office of Commuter Services (or something like that! lol..) at UMaine- they used to have a lot of info about rentals. Not sure if they still do, but it would be worth checking out...

Criagslist.org seems to have mostly Portland area rentals, but you can find some Bangor ones in there. It's worth checking out. Avoid listings that advertise "massage therapy" by someone named "Misty" as they may not be as advertised (little craigslist joke). Seriously though, craigslist has good listings. That's where I've found all of my apartments.

DM to your heart's content, folks, buts let's be careful not to post any material on the public boards which could be construed as defamatory.

I did not have a terrible experience with them, though the place (mobile home) I rented as "just refurbished" was still full of ice-covered lumber (in the living room), power tools -- table saw and the like -- also in the living room and the handymen seemed totally unaware that the big yellow truck in the driveway meant we were moving in NOW. They did clear out fairly quickly once they got the idea, though and we were able to move stuff in that day.
However, there was no propane (cooking fuel), no oil (heating fuel), the heat tape on the water line had not been completely or properly installed and our water froze the first night or two. We moved in March 1 of a very snowy year and waited two weeks for them to be able to bring us a fridge. Since we had made the deal before we started on our trek to Maine, our arrival should not have come as a surprise, I wouldn't think.
We were at a disadvantage, as we were renting with several house cats and a large dog, and were not sure how long we would be staying. The place was, in my opinion, somewhat over priced for what it was, but we were not charged pet deposits or excess damage deposit and when we left, our security deposit was returned in its entirety in a timely manner.
I know others have had different experiences. We rented "long distance", sight unseen and could have had a far worse outcome, in my opinion. However, as always "buyer (or renter) beware."
