Yes if you live in a town which has coastal access. If you live inland you're out of luck. They're about 10 dollars and are good for a peck (1/4 bushel) per tide. Even though I usually get a license I only dig a few times a year. When we cook out at the camp for the family we usually buy a bushel. It's easier and more reliable than trying to dig a bushel with a peck license over 3 days.

Best job in the world? ok - if you say so. Looks pretty rough. Leaning over, in the sun getting burns, freezing in winter, can't work with redtide. Glad they enjoy it though, cause I do enjoy a good clam feed. Best job....i don't think so.

Right now - best job is teacher. I don't have to work for the next 10 weeks or so. ( not entirely true....college course, learn new CAD software and develop curriculum, revise another course, revise school website.....plenty to be busy)

I have(had) clamdiggers int he family. I don't think they would call it "the best job in the world". Lotts of hard work, inclement weather, uncooperative clams, and fluctuating market prices. A pretty subjective judgement.

I dug clams for two summers out of high school ( it also convinced me to go to college!) That said it was a hard job though rewarding! We worked very hard for three to four hours a day,saw some beautiful sunrises and sunsets, chewed dulse like tobacco, drank wine at 9:00 am, and made more money than any of our friends working a real job. Not being savers winter was tough and I caught on fairly quickly that clam digging was a young man's work and I had no desire to pursue it beyond those two summers. I did like doing it and can see why someone would want to do it for a living! I have the utmost respect for Maine clammers!

The beauty of that video clip is that those 2 think it is the best job!
They love what they do, each and every day in season...I wish it were so for all of us with our own jobs.

Something to be said for that! I LOVED brewing beer. I just got too old to keep doing it everyday. Such is life!
