yep, used this remedy for snails as well, out west. I was told they got drunk and fell in and drowned. All I know is that you don't want to let the DOG into the garden before you empty the cans or it will make a mess of the garden, digging up the cans of beer-marinated snails and slugs to eat. Speaking from experience here...
