Then you got the Northern Rockys, and areas around them (Mt. Id. Wy. and the Dakotas), and im going to assume Alaska as well inbetween Anchorage and Fairbanks (its a whole lot of nothing, harsh, cold, nothing)

I have lived in southern ca for 30 years and let me tell you it's horrible. The traffic is insane no matter where you go. The taxes and gas prices are through the roof. The gun laws are ridiculous. There is nothing good here. Having the same weather all year long is boring. I am planning a move with my family to Maine near sangerville. I look forward to 4 seasons and having open gun laws and all lakes and water everywhere.

Default Moved to Maine from West Coast?

I know many of you posted about moving to Maine from California, Oregon etc. That was quite a few years ago though! We are in our early 60's, have lived in California (SF Bay Area) all our life. But our kids and grandkids are considering moving to Portland Maine from Idaho and WA, and we would LOVE to all be near to our family. I'm just wondering if I could handle the winters! I'm not able to do winter sports, and I have some health challenges. But, I'd love to be near family...wondering what you all think? How did it go for you moving to Maine from a mild climate?
Would love to hear from any or all of you!
Thanks!

I have cousins in the Concord - Walnut Creek area.

I would not think of it as a big deal.

If you are going to be urban, expect the streets to be cleared quickly after every storm. Since I assume that you are retired [or will be], you do not need to contend with commuting. Go out grocery shopping in the afternoon when the pavement was warmed and melted any remaining snow.

I am 64yo. I well understand that there are health challenges as we age.

We moved to Maine in September 2020 from Santa Barbara, CA. Motivating factors included disillusionment with the housing market and overall culture of Southern CA, a desire to get away from West Coast weather (and fires), and our daughter moving to Maine for college.
Moving mid-pandemic did present some unique challenges, but also led us to Washington County, for which I'll be eternally grateful.

Now, bear in mind we moved here because we LIKE cold, and take what I say with a grain of salt. But I haven't found the winters to be too bad. We're decidedly not urban, though not as remote as some, and even so we found that roads were typically cleared well and promptly. We didn't want to be out in the worst of it anyways. There's been a learning curve as we adjusted to thinking about winter preparation, how we would handle a really big storm or extended power outage, and so on, but on the whole it's been fine.

There was one day last winter - when we had that Arctic blast - where I questioned my sanity for having outdoor animals that needed tending. But beyond that it's been great. I don't do winter sports - bad knees! But I do embrace the indoor season, and use winter to do things like bake and cook lengthy complicated recipes, knit gifts for friends and family, catch up on all the reading that summer chores on the farm don't leave time for, etc.

Your question was mostly about the weather but I want to add one thing. People in Maine are different, and I mean that in the best way. Never have I encountered so many genuinely kind people, from the neighbor who delivered our groceries when we first arrived so that we could stay quarantined, to the guy I buy firewood from who helped me move two cords of wood from my previous house to this one rather than sell me two more. The level of helpfulness and trust is something I'm still adjusting to after a lifetime of watching my back in California and I look for opportunities to give back every day. I only pray that Maine can stay this way, centered in community and care for each other. I suspect that my location is a big part of this but even the people we've met in Portland have been pretty amazing.
