There is a motorcycle rally coming up where they open the Golden Road to motorcyclists for the first time: 2009 Maine H.O.G. Rally
As stated in the website: "Join us in some unusual and exciting activities including a guided ride on the "Golden Road," which has never been open to motorcycles!"
(Ooops! I see the deadline has passed for registration but at least some bikers will have a unique experience.)

We used to take a sunset ride from Greenville Junction to Rockwood and back in the summer. Always saw at least one moose on this ride. You can go to the Maine State Animal Park in Gray and you are guarranteed to see one there!

We went looking for moose Saturday night around knowles corner. We saw 8 in less than an hour. One big bull. We could also smell a couple of road kills, that will really wake you up.
I would be careful on this section of road. There are 3 totalled wrecks just from last week sitting in the garage station, all full size pickups or SUV's.
Take route 212 off of I-95 in Oakfield and go north to route 11 and that is Knowles corner. If you head north on route 11 towards Portage it is your best bet. We also saw deer, a rabbit, and a coyote.

Moose
We saw a moose on Sunday morning heading towards Shin Pond, it was a bull moose, his Antlers were just starting to grow, what a wonderful site to see.
We rode through the Baxter State Park tote road also and saw one in the woods, but it hightailed it out of site when he saw us.

forest beekeeper - I was wondering if you see moose often at your place. One of the things my husband and I are most looking forward to when we buy our property is an abundant wildlife population. We love sitting with binoculars and watching the critters go about their daily business. Hopefully we'll have moose there too, if we buy a large enough parcel.

Binoculars are nice, if you want to see the black flies on their backs. You will be surprised how many a moose just hang out within a few yards of you!

....and ticks. Many moose have to be put down due to the infestation of ticks.
The buggas will literally suck the blood out of the moose.

I don't know if I want to be close enough that I can see them well with no binocs...they can be dangerous and unpredictable from everything I've read about them. I sure don't want to be close enough to get easily trampled, lol.

ick...that has to be a heck of a lot of blood they suck out. The nasty little things would look like mini blood balloons, blech!

Almost all the moose we see up here are within 100 yards. Many of them don't mind you a bit. Some of them even tend to show off. The calves will huddle around mom, while she browses. We have canoed to within a few feet of a bull, many a time.
They don't mind vehicles and trains for the most part either. The biggest danger would be during the rut, when the bulls are rowdier!
