Default Peas and Salmon for the Fourth!

A tradition for our family was always grilled Atlantic Salmon with fresh peas from the garden for fourth of July dinner. We made sure we had peas planted by New England's version of Patriot's Day in April so we could have our own peas for the fourth. We switched to lobsters several years ago as salmon became tougher to find. We didn't plant peas this year (which would have rotted anyway) so we'll need to hit a farmer's market early Saturday morning for the fresh peas. Do you have any traditional Maine foods you enjoy on the Fourth?

I always do a big pot of baked beans on the fourth, the meat on the grill may change year to year, but always baked beans and steamed brown bread. Which is what I would consider a Maine Food, am I right?

You sure are right! B&M is still turning out the best baked beans on earth in Portland!

Ahh, DW's baked beans and brownbread. Only thing better was Mums. My mother used to cook a small turkey for the 4th. We could get back from downtown and slice off a couple sandwiches before heading back down. I kept it up, sometimes cook a ham shoulder just for the chsnge.

I am doing "Lobster Gazpacho" to take to a family gathering Saturday, so am using a traditional ingredient and helping the lobstermen.....it is delicious.

I remember my Dad taking pride in having garden peas for the 4th....but dont think we usually had salmon....(except for salmon pea wiggle using canned red salmon).

Peas and salmon sound great to me any time! I have to work tomorrow, but we have peas (two small pickings already eaten!) and if I can get my hands on some local salmon, it sounds like a late supper to me!

neat! I did get to the store and picked up a piece of salmon. It is US, but doesn't say Maine unfortunately. But this thread made me SO hungry for some...

Then I picked more peas (along with weeding... I can't help but want to pull the weed I find when I pick which makes it take so much longer).

Supper will be late tomorrow, but possible as I only work until 7. Folks better get their brew and Allens early on...
