Dogcrazy, I read a story I believe was in a Yankee magazine issue... some 6 months or so ago... POSSIBLY DownEast magazine, but I don't think so... see if you can find anything googling information about this...
There is a guy in NW Maine who takes in wolves... abused, misunderstood, etc.. from the western states and he rehabilitates them and gets them returned to their wild state...
Might not be anything you're interested in or it might trip your trigger.... I'll see if I can locate any info on what I'm rambling about... lol

You lost me entirely on the pitbulls. There's a breed that should have never been domesticated....far too many horror stories.

Pitbulls would not be my choice. It is the people that raise them that are at fault. They need to be raised in a loving environment. The breed is fine.... I guess society always blames the poor dumb animal.. the problem is the stupid idiot humans abusing and getting away with it....

DogCrazy;
I was surprised you haven't gotten any replies from Mrs1885, or Zugor, who are both very active in rescues, but then I realized you've posted in Maine, and not in the Pets forum. You might want to perform a search using "Animal Shelter" in that forum, and redirect your inquiry there.
I am traveling Maine, at present. We drove up the coast as far as Harrington, and now we're headed west -- so we won't make it to Caribou. Still, given what I've seen, and the other posts, you would probably be better donating your $149,000 to existing programs, and volunteering.
Best wishes.

The financial part is what concerns me most.Thats why i am also interested in dog and cat boarding.There is a place for sale in Caribou.It is supposed to be a well established boarding facility.Has a home on the property too.Its only $149k.

Good luck dogcrazy There is always a need for people like you who care enough to try to do something. and yes, I will agree that SOME people CAN be very cruel, I worked at the city animal control facility here years ago (before kids ) and I saw many,many,many tragic things there and I've found that I'm not nearly as surprised by the cruelty and stupidity of people these days..........but there are many really wonderful stories of some really kindhearted people as well. Don't lump all people together in one big pot!!! Lot's of us are really nice
Pitbulls have been bred for one reason, to kill another dog as quickly and efficiently as possible. They can, if bred properly, be very kind to people. After all the owners have to separate the dogs, at times, while still fighting.Those people don't wish to get bit. If you can rescue them and care for them and give them a better life, that's wonderful. They can be great pets (I've met some ) but it's still in their nature, just like herding dogs like to herd and when a scent hound catches a scent, their gone!!!!!!!!

Our eldest son was given a pit puppy. He had it for 2 years and tried very hard to train him the dog.
The nature and disposition of the breed came through at every turn. I know that he did seek help from others, and he did read a few books on the subject matter. Eventually our son gave the dog away.
There may be a few folks who do have pits, and who are not doing anything illegal with them. However the personality of the breed comes shining through and and makes training them very difficult.
It certainly is not a good choice for a beginner.
