Default Trash Dumps

This may seem like a really dumb question, but having moved to Maine, I'm lost as to what to expect when dropping off trash at a dump. Are they public or private? I guess I'm confused if you need to prove residency in order to dump your trash or if it's much simpler than that.

I would suggest you phone your town office and see what they have to say. Garbage disposal is pretty tightly regulated in Maine now, and I would guess that most dumps are now public, not private. Some towns have so-called "transfer stations" where garbage can be dropped off for later transfer to a waste-to-energy plant/landfill. Somewhere along the way, you will probably have to shell out for a dump permit issued by your town gov't. Good luck.

call your local town office and ask them what options there are for trash....it can vary greatly by town and/or county.

Each township that is 'organized' appears to have a recycling place. Where you can go to drop-off: paper, cardboard, plastic, glass, and metals.

We asked around and found that up here the county provided curb service. Every week a garbage truck comes around and does a pick-up. Just put everything into bags or a sealed can. They make a big deal about not wanting the animals to eat through your trash.

Everywhere else that we have lived, we had to pay for curbside garbage collection, but here it is free!

I love Maine.

We have a tritown transfer station that is very organized. Do recyclables pay for the service? Hmm,doubtful but MUCH,MUCH better then when I was young. As far back as I can remember and until ,oh say early 80's,the trash was deposited on the river bank at the "town dump" and twice a year a dozer would push the garbage toward the river! Well I presume once the trash flowed downstream it wasn't our issue. Thank goodness this practice didn't survive and our river is much cleaner (along with the ban of pesticides),so much that the Bald Eagle flourishes along our glorious river!

Where I live we have a transfer station that we take our trash to, they also take recyclables(sp?) such as cardboard, newspapers, glass, and car batteries, paint, etc...they also have a place for compost materials, Christmas trees, pumpkins, yard clippings, and a place for furniture, a place for building materials such as sheet rock and the like and believe it or not there is an area called 'TAKE IT OR LEAVE IT' !! I've gotten some great things from there !! It's a great way to recycle yard sale items that didn't sell, things that are leftover after you clean the basement or garage that aren't trash, you know the old saying 'one mans trash is another mans treasure !! It is free for residents, we get a sticker every year, the 1st is free, if you want one for a second car it costs $1.00.

if you live in a more urban or suburban area a trash truck will come around once a week and pick up your garbarge/recycles. More rural areas will require you to bring stuff to the landfills or transfer stations yourself. It really does vary widely by town, you usually need a town pass to get into the dumps.

Where I live we can pay for the garbage man to pick up once a week for like $4 or we can go to the dump/transfer station for $1.00/year sticker. Some towns still have "free" pickup and others have dump stickers that you need to purchase at their town offices and someone will pick them up

some places you have to use town garbage bags and pay a certain fee for each bag
