york -kittery area
just spent a week in the york area and loved it,layed on the beach just about every day and just enjoyed the calm and serenity. but i do have one question, why do some of the locals have such a negative attitude towards tourists,i would think that they would welcome them with open arms for the revenue, i understand that yes there are some loud ,rude, and downright nasty tourist but we all are not bad,for the most part i just try to go with the flow.
the only negative i had was driving to wells or kittery for a Dunkin Donuts coffee. and apperantly we were the only family around that preferred york over ogunquit, but to each his own.and we are planning a weekend trip in august back to the beach in york.

Most likely the rude "natives" you encountered don't rely on tourist revenue..or they have for so long that they are burnt out from the loud, rude, nasty ones that they are obliged to deal with. Perhaps they weren't locals at all. Some seasonal folk think themselves local and somehow better than day tourists.

It wasn't you it was the weather this year. Usually people in that area are so busy they don't take notice whether you're local or from away. This year things are so slow they KNOW they will end up broke at the end of the season and are just going through the motions. Everyone annoys them.

This is hilarious, Maineah!
Here in RI, I keep running into folks with too much time on their hands. If they can't get a job, start a little business. It ain't rocket science! If you have folks up there annoyed by the tourists, let 'em see which side their bread is buttered on!
We used to call that an "attitude adjustment"!

Enthusiasm is a sloping curve. On good summers the enthuasiam curves up, in a crappy weather summer (like now ) it curves down.
You start out excited (and friendly) at the prospects of all the money you'll make selling lobster lollipops to the tourists this summer. As the season unfolds and the weather is nice you can see how well you're doing and you are happy, excited and friendly to everyone . You have to buy a hundred more cases of lobster lollipops than you first planned on and things are good right up till the leaves start falling and sticking to your lollipops.
In a bad year like this one the enthuasiam starts out in May on a high like always but after the fourth of July and you're still on your first case of lobster lollipops and the wet weather has made the wrappers sticky and the balsam pine "Maine" pillows have lost their scent you know you're in trouble. You have to try to stay open to make at least a living wage but you know you'll be tossing out the lobster lollipops and the scentless pillows in just a few short weeks. Your attitude slips and you become crotchety and quick with what few tourists do straggle in.
These were the types of summers which always spawned a bunch of mysterious fires in Old Orchard Beach during the fall and winter. Insurance money was better than nothing.
