Hi all. My fiance and I are looking at buying a house in Madawaska, ME. I am originally from WA and my fiance is from central ME. I have spent several weeks in Maine in the middle of winter and I have to say I'm impressed. I liked how it was more sunny and bright in the winter compared to the pacific northwest's 9 months of clouds and drizzle. We want the 4 seasons. The snow is a plus for me as it works as good light therepy along with the larger amounts of sunny days. Helps with my minor SAD issues. From what I understand, the precip is more evenly distributed throughout the year, which to me is a big plus. Some rainy days in the summer sound refreshing instead of the forest fires and drought. I don't mind sub-zero temps that much. I lived in interior AK for 7 years and adapted well. Maine is considered home for my fiance.

Our reasons for choosing Madawaska: We are interested in French culture and would like to learn the language. Edmundston sounds nice for resturants and shopping so we'd frequent there often. We would like to purchase a house in town and an old fixer would suit us well. We are aiming to visit in the fall and a possible move when my online job is lined up. We are wanting to live very simply and have a slow pace of life.

So my questions:

Will the people in Northern Maine accept us? Also, what are the best high-speed internet providers in Madawaska? Any opinions and personal experiances are welcomed. Thanks for reading.

I have relatives that live in Madawaska and I visit in the winter for snowmobiling. It is a very nice small town and you can cross the river right in town to get to Edmunston pretty easily. Edmunston is not that large of a city, they do have a somewhat small mall. A lot of the old timers in Madawaska speak french, not so sure about the younger generations. It is good you have an internet job lined up as there are not many jobs there and the mill is in jeapody of closing. I have a cousin who worked there for years and was laid off last year, along with a lot of others in town. I guess that will help in finding a good deal on real estate. Madawaska is pretty far north so daylight is not very long in the winter, long summer days though. You can read many, many post on here as to if you will be accepted in northern Maine. I think if you lived in AK for 7 years with no issues you should fit in here, same kind of people from my experience.

Thanks for the reply. I think Madawaska is the place for us and I can't wait to visit.

Arushan,

Yay for deciding on one of the best places ever to live and raise a family! You seem to understand what you are getting into, which is definitely good!

The people in Northern Maine will absolutely accept you. The Acadian culture is extremely friendly and since they don't get a lot of visitors up there, they'll be really happy to have a new family in town. Just be prepared for a constant barrage of "Why did you move here?" ;p

I don't live in Madawaska anymore, so I couldn't tell you about high-speed internet providers. The Chamber of Commerce might be a good place to call, though.

Best of luck to you and I hope you love living in Madawaska as much as I did! Feel free to get in touch with any specific questions.

Not sure how serious the original poster is about moving to Madawaska as he has stated he is also intending to get his GED and move with his girlfriend to New Zealand.

Still serious about it. We decided against New Zealand because it's not realistic for us. My fiance's all set with her schooling, I'm doing online college.

We're aiming for early next month to visit Madawaska and test the water.
