Movingto Maine
Hello
We are moving to Maine this summer from Alaska, currently looking at the Farmington or Bangor area. I will be going back to school and my wife will be looking for a job, her background is social work and she has her Masters in Special Ed. Whatever info we can get, housing schools, jobs etc will be helpfull.
I will be retiring from the Coast Guard and will be looking for a part time job.
Thanks

For the Bangor area, here's a starting point: www.chcs-me.org
Also, for Bangor-proper demographics, etc., this site looks pretty comprehensive, though I can't vouch for its accuracy: www.city-data.com/city/Bangor-Maine.html

Where abouts in AK are you from? I am hoping to move there in 2 years.
The State has some human services type jobs http://www.maine.gov/bhr/state_jobs/open_jobs.shtml
you can also try http://www.jobsinme.com that's where I find alot of my work.
Apts and jobs can can also be found at www.bangornews.com or areaguides.net for apts. I live in Newport which is about 30 miles south of Bangor, it's a nice area if you want to live away form town.

Bangor is great!
I am retired Navy, and moved just North of Bangor. My wife works at the Commissary in Bangor, so we will likely see you shopping
There are a lot of us retirees in the area.
Come on in to the Old Town VFW and I will buy you a beer.

We loved Bangor!
Bangor is a wonderful area for finding work, going to college, and living a good life. We are now Downeast, but make a trip once a month or so to Bangor. It is a growing city, but when we lived there we felt part of the community. The kids (3 of them at the time) were in Abraham Lincoln school and I liked the teachers and the education they were getting. I never felt as if they were lost in a sea of students. One of the best parts about Bangor is simply it's location. You are central within the state, so it's not far from the coast, the woods, the western mountains, even Canada.

I'm thinking of Kenai Pen., Soldotna, Sterling area but once I get up there to visit it will depend on the jobs etc. I thought of Juneu but heard tourists cause the pop. to triple over the summer and that's too many people for me.
My aunt lives near Farmington if you have questions I can ask her. Just pm me. But if I was moving from out of state, I'd pick Bangor over Farmington.

We are moving to Maine from CA. this summer. Our daughter is a student at UMaine, Orono and we have visited several times, in all seasons, over he past 4 years. We love the outdoor lifestyle and being near a university town. We bought a home on Pushaw Lake after having spent February in Bangor to try out the winter. Our son is currently in the Coast Guard on an icebreaker out of Seattle. He started going to Maine when he was a student at the Coast Guard Academy in CT. I wish you the best of luck in your search and trust you will find Maine to your liking.

We are moving to Old Town from Southern, CA about an hour noth of LA. It's an old mining town at about 3000' elevation in the San Gabrial mountains. Looking for water and no crowds!
