Every labor day weekend we camp/canoe in East Brownfield. Last year we were under siege by mosquitoes worse than ever. I'd bet Maine had record sales for repellent. Is it as bad this summer? Should we bring drums of repellent this year?

I can't speak for the rest of Maine though down here in the Greater Portland area the mosquitoes are bad but no worse than usual. Even with the really wet summer we have had the mosquitoes are what I would term moderate. The deer flies however are abundant. I have given up on my daily walks as the deer flies are just intolerable around here. It may be a completely different story in East Brownfield. I'd plan for the worst and hope for the best.

I spent the day at the gun range on Saturday and at a cook out on Sunday without one bite. But, I may have just been lucky.

Thanks for the replies. I can deal with the usual amount of skeeters but last year was like no other. It had rained hard the last 2 weeks of August, the saco was very high, and the skeeters were swarming during THE DAY! Sun was shining bright and the skeeters were out - never saw anything like it.

Mosquitoes? You mean those small helicopters that keep crashing into us?

Washington County natives keep assuring us the mosquitoes are usually not this bad. It's all the excess rain we've had. The other thing we're still experiencing up here is black flies. Seems we've had a fresh batch appear over the last two weeks.

We just cancelled a camping trip we were going to take at Baxter next week. They're just too bad to live outdoors 24/7/3 right now.

Twixt the mosquitos and the deer flies.....I am staying pretty much inside during evening and early morning hours. They have been bad.

You're right... The deer flies seem to be worse than the skeeters.

I just took a short moped ride through an old dirt road nearby. I stopped for just a minute or two and was swarmed by deer flies and skeeters. They like to come out after a thunder shower I guess!

When I used to attend camp in Maine as a boy, there was an awful-smelling skeeter repellent they used, came in a little brown bottle. It was extremely effective.

Anyone know what this was called or if it's still available?
