I'm a true Mainer. I was born in Presque Isle, Me and have lived in Caribou, New Sweden, Limestone, on Loring Air Force Base and back again more than once. ITS THE BEST PLACE TO LIVE. EVERYONE IS SOO NICE AND SWEET. AND FOR A BLACK GIRL LIVING IN A TOWN WHERE I AM THE ONLY MINORITY IN THE WHOLE SCHOOL I ATTENED I ALWAYS FELT CO****TABLE AND SAFE. I WISH I HAD NEVER MOVED. If you want the "good life" move to Northern Maine.

dia,,,its great to see your post,,,often mainers are viewed as small minded hicks,, not very open to change, and not open to embracing minorities, because there are so few..

I am from "Away" and moved to a tiny town in Aroostook County (not quite as far north as New Sweden) from the Boston area 10 years ago. I was welcomed and embraced in the community from all generations of its residents. Most of us that come to Maine from "Away" come because we are enchanted with the way of life here and wouldn't change a thing! The question I was asked most often is; why would I leave Boston to live in Mars Hill.....obviously they had never lived in Boston!

The windmills are there but I like the way they look, it is relaxing to watch them. We can hear them if we go outside but it is more of a sound like the wind (which does blow here often). When I moved here I couldn't sleep because I was waiting for train whistles, it was just too quiet. I've gotten over it We are at the south eastern end of the mountain so they are not right in our backyards like our neighbors on the north and north eastern end of the mountain.

Maybe a town that couldn't afford computers didn't have them in the school, but I bet they were still educated. I live in Aroostook County and honsestly some of the smartest people I have ever met are from here. (I have lived in Washington D.C. as well, so I get out). Maybe your husband's time here sucked, but honestly.. Maybe you are reading too much into the situation. When things happen in small towns people want to know. If a family that used to live in the town showed up, the town would probably like to know. Mine would.

My youngest daughter was in the free laptop program and as far as I can tell it was a success here. She and her friends were very careful and did not abuse the privilage.
Many towns in Maine have volunteer fire departments, including Cumberland, and it's a great way to get involved with your community as well as contribute to it.

I ahve found the people here to be cold and indifferent. Beware if you do not come from Maine and i you live in Aroostook County and are not of french desent you will have a very hard time. Mainer do not Like outsiders
Instead of the Sign when you enter main saying Maine The Way life sould be!
It sould say
Outsiders Go Home! Or Else!
