Outsiders in Northern Maine.
People that move to Northern Maine seem to complain alot. I moved away many years ago and travled accross the country on my own and through the Army. Although I do laugh at alot of oddities we have up here in maine I saw most parts of the Country are just as bad. Though upon moving back a few years back I realize why alot of people that move up here may feel as if they dont belong. One thing is we are a people who are proud of our heritage and beliefs. Also we are tired of people coming up here to exploit us. Aroostook County use to be an area of morales and respect for one another. As the years pass and more people move up here without morales and respect the crime rate has gone up people are not as friendly. Now Im not saying locals are not part of the problem but look at the facts. The majority of crime and problems are coming from those who move here. Maine is a great place to visit but for many people its not a place to live. Im sorry for any who have had a bad experiance here but try to see it from the locals point of view.

That's the most bizarre thing I have ever heard. The lack of morales and respect begins in the home, and I've seen how children in school behave, here and elsewhere. Respect and morales aren't being taught any more. People are too busy making a living all over the country to spend the time it takes to teach them to their kids. Most parents will spend more energy defending the disrespectful behavior of their kids when a problem is presented to them than they do trying to correct the problem. I too have traveled widely, being an Army brat. There are as many good honest people in every corner of the world as there are ignorant people. My father taught me that when I was a child, so that I would identify with the individual person and not with their race, or nationality or religion or any other prejudicial preconception. Just because someone wasn't born and raised in Maine doesn't make them any more likely to be disrespectful or to commit crimes. Many of the names in the court and police reports that I see are well known Maine family names.

When our children have been institutionalized, it leaves only the institution to teach and instill morals, since the parents are absent in their lives.
However our public-funded institutions do not address morals, respect or ethics.
They teach standardized tests, teaching the tests, rather than reading and writing, rather than morals, respect or ethics.
A room of 30 six year olds, governed by those six-year olds, reverts to the lowest moral standard of that group. No six-year old is going to be the model of ethical behavior for that group.

Now that is just silly! I regularly drove into Keene when my son went to college there and he was a long time blooming so that covered about 6 years. It is a little city with the widest main street in America. I once drove thru Washington and there after drove hundreds of miles out of my way thru the blue ridge mts and down thru NC to avoid 95 thru Baltimore and Washington.
Keene is an absolutely beautiful and idylic college town that borders Vermont and north western Massachussets. It is lovely!

Instead of the Sign when you enter main saying Maine The Way life sould be!
It sould say
Outsiders Go Home! Or Else!

Kayet67 sorry you feel that way but one thing you should understand is the slogan "THE WAY LIFE SHOULD BE" mostly applies to those of us in Downeast Maine as well as Aroostock County. We live a simple way of life one where if your neighbor needs help folks do work together to help them be it fixin their home cause of a fire and there was minimal damage and we all know how insurance companies never quite pay enough for the total repair or if a family is down on their luck we come to their aide be it with food, clothing, toys for the kids, and if some of us can help even with a few dollars o help get fuel for heat or givin them some wood to burn for their wood stove. We have no issues with outsiders as long as they keep in mind we did not force them to come here they chose to move here so with that came the choice to accept our way of life and not change it to meet the standards they left be it from NY or NJ or Mass or Ct. We do have issues with these kinds of folks that expect high speed internet or cable tv or super malls or high tech high paying jobs. Most of us live from pay check to pay check and we do not have the luxury of planning trips to Europe or Florida or California or the islands like some of these trust fund babies that move into these areas. Most of us drive old cars or trucks and live in simple single family homes nothing fancy.
You want to be accepted then learn the basic element of blending in and not trying to compare our way of life to what you left behind cause if this is not what you want then you can make the choice again and move back to what you left as it seems you must have been much happier there than you are here. My wife is a good example of one of theose that moved here from a big city and she is having a tough time adjusting to this way of life living from season to season and some of the so called isolation that we have come to know as our way of life. From Spring to late Fall you have your vegetable garden, you fish, dig for clams and brush and cut fire wood and can your vegetables for winter then come winter you gather at friends homes for supper or just spend time at your home with your TV or Computer or a good book and wait for the warm weather to come again. For those of us that fish winter means we fix gear or work on our boats and when it is time we hunt or ice fish but that is the WAY LIFE SHOULD BE so yes I think you have the wrong idea of what the slogan means. As of recent this state has been called the VACATIONLAND as this is what our politicians want to see happen here have Maine become one big tourist state a place for the rich and famous to live and have the rest of us move out.

I know a local realtor who keeps an old caddy parked at the airport with keys in the visor, so anyone coming here can use it when they arrive.
