Somehow I am thinking that you would not be interested in tree bark recipes.
But you did say: "Starks"

Consider going to a few Fairs this fall. Ask folks what they think.
The fairs are outstanding, there is one each week for the next 4 or 5 (Fryburg Fair is a Biggie)
Damn near everyone at these events are Farmers or Farmer want to be. And I'm sure you could get ALL of the input you'd need to be confused, but make a better decision from all of this input. Hell, ask those folks who look like you, eat like you, dress like you, are like you. there isn't anyone better to ask, then that.
I'm sure there are a TON of places in Maine that you would fit it, and love. But in the end, it is you that has to decide, and live with your decision so take your time.
I live in the center Maine area, and would be happy to show you around, if you are ever in the area.

Gotta go sell something to the tourist manhandling the merchandise, right now. Trying to figure out how to keep these cases of Lobster Pops fresh through Labor Day, (ha, ha ha.) They should have been gone by now!

You might also check out the midcoast towns of Hope and Whitefield. They are beautiful, rural towns within an easy driving distance of the ocean and larger towns like Damariscotta and Augusta. Lots of farming and friendly people of your persuasion.
Here is a website from the Hope General Store that might give you an idea. There was also a recent article in Down East magazine about the town.

I would vote Starks. Centrally located, not far from the University in Farmington, original home of Hempfest.

Oh man, you need to check out Belfast. Very cool vibes, a farmers' market to die for (they close down Main Street for it!), the co-op and the Green Store are first rate, the movie house has pink elephants on the roof, and the people are like the '60s never ended.
Edited to add: Absolutely check out the Common Ground Fair and MOFGA: http://www.mofga.org/

I am really amazed at all the great replies! Not one negative ....We are planning a visit soon, maybe in a couple of months (winter does not scare us) and we will take our time and explore. I have been to Maine twice, shore and interior. Felt a great vibe and felt "home". I got the same feeling in Scotland, but it is a wee bit far from family. I have taken note from all of you and will keep you informed. Belfast..funny, we thought the same thing. My grandparents were from Derry, near Belfast, N. Ireland. Really am anxious and excited to move. Thanks to all.
Is there a big Celtic influence in Maine?
