Gee, thanks, Mainah! I hope I get a chance to wander up that far during the season. The DH has work in cooper so he's been checking out his favorite Washington county areas for birds. It's gonna be good.

Everyone has a favorite spot for hunting. That particular trip is one we do only once a year as it is so far out in the boonies. It's a seven and a half hour ride from Freeport. We used to do real well bird hunting over by Katahdin Iron Works. Lots of moose over that way too. Plus it's three hours closer too! The deer hunting in the Southern part of Maine is very good. The deer run a bit bigger way up north but they're fewer in number. Turkeys have taken over around here. As I said before we did not see the numbers of small ones we saw last summer but there sure are plenty of mature ones around. I have nine of them that hang around the back yard every day. There's one big old Tom in that bunch that has to go over 30 pounds. My neighbor counted over 60 in a group in a farmers field the other day. Farmers must love them!

Ssssh, don't tell anyone, but here in southern ME we've got lots of deer AND turkeys. We've even seen some cottontails in the vicinity. Lots of wildlife thrive here in the suburbs! I can get(maybe) a bonus buck up in Washington Co. where they run big, but I'd rather have good table fare like a spikehorn or doe any day.
Just the ruffed grouse are few and far between. I gave up on pheasant since it appears mostly the rod and gun club members get to take them shjortly after they release them.

I wish I could be more anxious for the deer hunting seasons to start, but to be honest with you, its more like being on top of Breeds Hill with the redcoats charging, guns at the ready, willing to do anything and anything to take away your property rights. I know their are good hunters, and it helps Maine's coffers, but with each passing year, its gets tougher and tougher to deal with the disrespectful deer hunters.
After a serious infringement the year before, last year was the first year we put a stop to all hunting on this farm...friend and foe alike. That ended a 251 year tradition of allowing hunting. I'm sure a few sneak in as its too big to really stop all hunting, but overall it was nice. No ruts in our fields, no complaining about who got to hunt where and when, and not having to worry about who might shoot a sheep thinking they got an albino deer (LOL).
Its definitely a new tradition that we like...and one will continue to enforce as its easier to say "no hunting" then try and regulate the hunters that are currently out there. Still I wish every hunter the best of luck in getting their tags filled this year. I know its an excellent way to manage wildlife in population.

He goes slightly southwest...around Sanford area. Guess there are fields where they are stocked and released. He has yet to get one, but his buddy was successful 2 years ago. Such gorgeous birds!

On a lucky day in MA, you would run into the stocking truck and just wait until he left the reservation!
