Hubby got drawn for elk hunting here in AZ so he won't be in Maine for the annual pheasant hunt.

DH and I put in for our doe permits. Keeping our fingers crossed...we see lots of does around here. chill in the air has peaked the dogs nose. He's rarin' to find birds! We'll probably have to travel for that.

Moughie, where does your hubby hunt pheasant in Maine? My experiences in southern ME have been a bust for pheasant. Seems the local boys release 'em and take 'em in one whack. After the rod and gun clubs have been through the dog can't find any, and there's nothing wrong with his nose!!

I saw a 215 lb boar and talked to a boy who took a 125 lb boar, both on opening day of bear.

We will not be able to do any hunting this season, our freezer is too full.

Even though I am not a big fan of bear hunting either, I've tagged 6 so far this season.

Out of state bear hunters bring $62 million into Maine's economy each year.

It probably all goes into the general fund............

This morning my neighbor let his beag out to run for the first time this season. She was so happy! You always know where she is because she barks the entire time. She's a smart girl. She cuts across one of our trails to get to our wood yard which leads to the road, stops at the road to look for traffic and takes off again. I stopped looking for the coon my dogs think is in the barn long enough to watch her cross. If they're training a pup she comes up from the wood yard to my house because she knows I'll put them in the truck and drive them the half mile home. Puppies get tired you know! Obviously she has me well trained.

FIL got a 360 lb. bear on opening day. He gets around pretty well for 73 years old. Says he's going to do a full sized mount. I share most other's opinions on bear hunting. It's not my thing. Not a whole lot of sport sitting in a luxury tree stand above a pile of jelly donuts for 4 hours.

I got the target area mowed last week and have been plinking with the .22 to get the "eye" working again. New neighbors are renting the house across the street so I anticipate a visit form the local police when we break out the deer rifles to sight them in. Happens every time someone new moves in.
We have seen twin eight pointers out back this summer so I'm hoping deer season will be fruitful.
We will be taking our annual bird trip to the North Maine Woods the week of October 6th this year. Reports from workers in the area say there are pretty good numbers of partridge sightings.
