That's an excellent idea msina! If jcinsov does not hunt he could give permission to a hunter to bag a deer on his property in exchange for some of the meat! Win Win the way I see it!

I have a pretty good piece of ground here in Northern Maine and this weekend while out and about cutting brush, we have seen almost no deer track. The last few winters hace dessimated the population. I truly hope they can regenerate. It doesn't look good for this hunting season!

That's too bad. There's still plenty of the varmints around the Southern part of Maine! We had always observed that up that way there were deer but they were few and far between. We used to hunt deer the first week of the season up that way but had very mixed success. When we did get a deer up there it was always a nice one though! The North American Whitetail Association says that Northern Maine is the very end of the Whitetail deer's range in the east. Still if you go with a good guide up North you may get the wall hanger of a lifetime!

There is also a coyote predation problem up here. Some friends of mine got permission to take a baby moose carcass a couple weeks ago and used it for bait. In a half an hour one night, they lit up a pack of over a dozen!

if you want some venison, this is what i'd do, go to a place where they cut up deer, ask if you can learn how to skin deer, (no pay) help the guy that skins the deer, til you can skin one yourself, then ask one of the hunters if they would trade in a few pkges of venison (for the price of skinning) (or work it out with the butcher if he charges by the pound)

having worked a few falls cutting up deer/moose a good skinner is hard to find, and a pair of extra hands really helps, you may even get lucky, that some out of stater may pay for his deer to be cut -up, and never comes back to pick it up (just wanted the picture)
