Bangor in the top 25 (Portland: how much, transfer, purchasing)

I just saw that Bangor is in the top 25 places in the US recommened by Money Magazine to retire in. I never thought much about it but if you don't mind winter, we have everything else you could need close by. University - for Sr. courses, some good restaurants, medical center, some museums, and only a short drive to the coast. Oh yes and an airport too or a 2 hour drive to Portland to fly out of there - cheaper.

I choose to move to Maine to retire. The choice seemed obvious to us.

My husband was transferred to the Bangor area, but I am retired. Thought I would pull a switch on all of the people retiring to Florida. It is packed and hot down here.

Money Magazine: Usually would not be looking at cheapest or most expensive, but best value for the dollar.

How much do you get for your home-purchasing dollar;
how much do you get for your tax dollar;
and the cost-of-living.

And of course there are an assortment of universities, restaurants, 2 hospitals with assorted medical centers, museums, river frontage and near-by coast, an international airport, golf course, lots of fishing, hunting, the city 'forest' bog and boardwalk, etc.

It is to our benefit that living here is as inexpensive as it is

Living just north of Bangor, and working in Bangor, I do believe they got it right. Bangor is a great little city, you have just about everything you could want there, yet within 20 mins. I'm back home, in the woods, in my quite peaceful place. I figure I have the best of both worlds living here.

Bangor is a bit too "city" for me, but as cities go, it is quite nice.

Bangor is a good place to load up with supplies before disappearing back into the woods. I hope to one day have that pleasure to last me through Maine's winter, socializing only with snowmen and red squirrels.

I hear you there! We go to "town" once a week, but I will be glad when I can go back to once a month, or thereabouts, supply runs like I did in the past when I lived remotely.

As for now, my business address and banking are both in Bangor (set up there before I moved, because I knew it would be central to where ever I landed). I works pretty well this way.
