Me, I don't ask about the bugs. I assume there are bugs everywhere, at some time in the season. We get ants here and lots of spiders; DW won't even go down to the basement this year. Has a thing about webs in her hair, I guess. I just swat 'em.

For me, Maine represents much more than its entomological population (its bugs). I like the trees, the peace, the freedom, the fresh air, the stars, the super-blue skies, the smell of pine needles beneath my feet. All the bugs in the world won't keep me away from that!

Bwawahahahahawawa!

OK, wait a minute, need to catch my breath. No, no, not laughing at you. A cabin deep in the woods in spring and early summer, you'll have blackflies thick enough to darken the sun, clouds of mosquitoes, and enough no-see-ums to actually see 'em. Then in mid and late summer the flies come out. My niece gave up her morning runs on the dirt road near my brother's camp on a lake north of the Airline because she couldn't outrun the deer flies, moose flies, and green-headed flies. I've been bitten by horse flies in the middle of Penobscot Bay a mile or more from the nearest land.

One reason many Indian tribes moved from the deep woods to the coast each spring was to escape the biting insects. At least along the shore they could get a breeze most of the time.

Site your cabin where it will get a breeze. That keeps the bugs down. Stock up on head nets, DEET, and those full-body bug suits that L.L. Bean, Cabela's, and other places sell. Double screen your windows to keep the no-see-ums out.

Enjoy.

It seemed to me that this past year the skeeters were far less thick than previous years.

Once again the black fly missed us. This is 2 years straight that the waves of black fly going through the state have missed us entirely.

I've only been up once in black fly season. Situation was FIL passed in December and burial was postponed to April or May. (I surmise this is not unusal?)

I WILL NEVER COMPLAIN ABOUT MOSQUITOES THE REST OF MY LIFE!!!!

Black flies are mean little things, make you bleed and swell. Long time residents claim some resistance to whatever these devils do. My SIL who is from away but who has lived in ME for 20 years wears one of those screened bug hats whenever black flies are active. A wise purchase I'd say.

I don't mean to hijack this thread, but how are the bugs in Camden and Boothbay Harbor? We're planning to move to one of those two areas, and I never even thought to ask about the bugs, as they're not a problem in the NY/NJ metro area where we currently live.

I'm learning so much from this forum!

Being in Mississippi, I wasn't sure what midges were..so I did my search....seems we call them gnats down here. heh This year, our mosquitoes are extremely bigger than in the past...guess its all the rain? My brother tried to tell me it was a skeeter eater...but after I showed him one...he was like...OMG...! Seems up here in the country we have huge mosquitoes. haha
