Mud season was really truely serious this year because of wierd climate activity. It rained in Massachusetts for two and a half months this spring, and itrained here in Maine for three and a half months. THREE AND A HALF MONTHS OF POURING RAIN. In March we got the cold cold mud and expected it to last for 4 to 6 weeks. But then, I suppose I should not be scary. Therre are droughts and there are monsoons, as life goes on and on.

I think the times to come are April and October. That's because if you find that you like those 2 months, you will have a nice long stretch of time where you enjoy living in Maine and don't find it too difficult. If you DON'T like those 2, then it's a short stretch, and the rest of the year will seem awfully long.

I suggest February first and again in mid June. February is very cold and desolate and June is the height of black fly season. Take a nice walk in the woods in June to introduce yourself to the bugs. If they don't drive you crazy then you will be ok.

So far this season a duck hunter was shot by his partner. (Does Dick Cheney hunt ducks?) Anyway it's pretty safe in the woods with the possible exception of November. The leaves are gone in November and the ground is freezing and crunchy. There isn't much to see in the woods in November so if you don't go into the woods in November you have not missed much. If you do, wear florescent orange!
